Truck carrying 40,000 pounds of toxic soil from East Palestine train derailment site crashes on the highway.

You just can't make this chit up. I mean what are the chances? Well, the chances were a lot more when it's being driven by a 74-year-old driver. Did we lose so many truckers that 74-year-old dudes have to drive hazardous loads? I got family that were truckers, not saying a 74 shouldn't drive at all but perhaps less sensitive cargo is all Im saying.

www.cbsnews.com...

A truck that was responsible for carrying 40,000 pounds of contaminated soil from East Palestine, Ohio — where a train carrying hazardous materials crashed in February — overturned on Monday. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency said that roughly half of the soil that was on the truck ended up spilling along the highway.

The tractor trailer, which had an open top, was traveling north along SR-165 on Monday when the accident occurred sometime after noon local time in Columbiana County. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the vehicle's 74-year-old driver, Phillip Falck, had gone off the right side of the road, hit a ditch and utility pole and overturned. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the truck "on its side, off of the right side of the roadway."

About half of the soil onboard – roughly 20,000 pounds – ended up spilling out of the truck, prompting responses from the local fire department and Ohio EPA, which said that "the spill was contained and is not a threat to nearby waterways."

Falck was "cited for operating a vehicle without reasonable control," the highway patrol said.

The soil onboard the truck was from the site in East Palestine where a Norfolk Southern train went off the tracks on Feb. 3 as it was carrying numerous hazardous substances. Locals were temporarily ordered to evacuate amid concerns that the polyvinyl chloride onboard, as well as other substances, could potentially cause an explosion.

Spread it as Far as Possible!

Did they set fire to it yet?

Like watching a Three Stooges act with this.

And I swear they're trying to spread that contamination as far as they possibly can.

Curious to know if the truck even had placards on the cargo, and if it did what HAZ Class was it labeled as?

Used to drive a dump truck, so I feel like I can safely ask this.......why transport in an open top trailer in the first place? I get the ease of loading but in no way would that fully contain whatever chemicals are mixed in from blowing out with the wind even with the tarp.

A thorough proper clean up and transport would of consisted alot of 55 gal drums sealed and labeled and being in a closed trailer. Seemed bad from the start using a dump truck…

Open Top trailer?

Really?

In what world is the EPA going to continue to pretend they are taking this seriously? I heard one of their spokespersons on NPR... he was all it take more to deal with this because "We follow the rules..." and such.

This is them "following the rules?"

Toxic waste in an open top trailer... you really are showing the country "how much you care."

When are people going to realize that the chemicals "contaminating" that soil are not dangerous in the first place? You would practically have to eat it by the pound for it to have any effect.

A few years ago, we had finished a test on a cooling unit. To get it ready for shipping I was draining the coolant out of it by pumping it into a storm drain. About 15 minutes after I started, I had fire trucks and police cars all over the place. Somebody saw the hose and reported us for dumping hazardous waste.

What I was "dumping" was Distilled De-ionized Water. In other words "PURE" water. Di-hydrogen Monoxide.

Yeah but contaminated dirt isn't water. so... there is that. And the danger isn't in consuming the contaminant by eating the sand, the danger is in the chemicals leaking into the water supply.

The chemicals in question are a polymer. In other words a solid. This particular chemical doesn't leech into the water supply. That was one of the reasons that the decision was made to burn the chemical, the other was to prevent an explosion. I have an interest in this. My Niece and her family live about a mile and a half from where the train derailed. I spoke with the Assistant Chief of the fire company who was involved. I looked up the MSDS sheet on the chemical. www.guidechem.com...

This is being hyped. She has at least one representative from a trial lawyer knocking on her door every day.

In section 6.2 says otherwise about environmental precautions; however there is a lot of incomplete information especially about the toxicity to life. I see a lot of no data available as if it is an unknown to what it can do. Makes you wonder…

I fail to see how this discussion represents a 'hyping' of the topic.

Not looking to start an argument here, but it seems to me that ATS not being a "news aggregation" website means specifically that we discuss topics...

From my perspective, I have not seen much coverage of the follow-up of this event. Most of it being sterilized NPR broadcast material, and 180 second news segments, saying the proforma "all is well" and/or something like "we are so "on this" - no worries." Hell, the NPR gave the EPA spokes people and their contracted talking heads spend almost a half hour explaining in great detail just how competently they were going to handle this.

So my reaction is a resounding 'meh' when they affirm their intentions and means. Reasons: something that's being "hyped?"

Not to me. After enduring the party-line... I was annoyed, I still am. I expect much better from public servants... (It seems they care more for the luster of appearances, than the security of a job well-done.)

But there is also the possibility that perhaps where you live, or in your information circle, you can't escape it, it's everywhere continuously... so maybe you are correct. I can't say I envy you... I have suffered the same kind of overexposure in other things... political theater and activist journalism, to name a few.

But since we don't just 'collect' news reports and media and string a bunch of disparate comments after them (a la 'news aggregate' site,) I consider this a discourse, a dialogue, a discussion. Maybe at times we get it wrong... but frequently, we don't.

Hence, I feel that declaring something overly emphasized in a discussion forum directly implies that the discussion should end. Or perhaps you did simply mean the coverage should end? I can't speak of your intentions, that would be rude.

I especially appreciate your sharing your knowledge about the substances we are talking about. We need that to be part of the discussion. I respect your knowledge and posts, really. What I think is that, at least, I'm still interested.

Please accept my apologies, if somehow my words make you feel harassed. That is honestly not my intent.
