Hey... wasn't that booked banned?

No. It's one of the world's big bestsellers.

There were some lawsuits in the more backward parts of the USA and one school removed it from its library or something -- just the usual Bible Belt nonsense. Insignificant.

David Mitchell rocks!

Very happy to hear that you think so.

As for the Culture, I've been a citizen since about 1993. Even went drinking with Diziet one time. I ended up under the table.

Yes mate have read everything he's put out (other than his most recent one) - extremely talented chap.

As for you drinking with Ms Sma have to admit I'm quite jealous as seem to have developed a bit of a crush.

I mostly prefer horror, fantasy, sci-fi but it doesn't really matter which genre, any good fiction will do.

Hey mate, wholeheartedly recommend this trilogy, it's extreme black comedy in parts but thought the story telling was excellent (and very entertaining).

Free audiobook version available here.

Good to hear it mate.

Just recently finished 'Blindsight' by Peter Watts and think you might like it.. if you've not read it already.

I just noticed that you mentioned fantasy as one of your favorite genres. Then I must suggest to you one that has some humor in it as well. It's about 400 pages long and the title of the book is "The Wizard Of Destiny," and it was written by a fellow named "Kenneth Dwain Harrelson." It's the kind of fantasy I personally like to read - no unpronouncable names and wry humor throughout - not dull and dry and serious to a fault. It's set in a world almost exactly like earth, but in a time before 1000 a.d. (I forget if it says what year exactly.) Here's what the cover looks like:

Hey Bally just checking in.

I got the first 65 or so pages to sample on the Google play store.

Anderson is very good at what he does, I'm just not feeling the slow dance but that's on me, not him.

I bet it's something your looking for.

Ok, I finished this in one sitting.

Excellent writing and not a word was minced.

It ended way too soon in my opinion it felt a bit unfinished.

One of my favorite moments in the book was when Kino went to the first pearl merchant, and the way he the author set the scene with the dealer waiting for him to arrive.

It could've been a couple of pedestrian lines of prose, instead we get this:

It felt like I had discovered a pearl myself when I read those lines.

Thanks Peeple, but I don't like audio books.

My mind starts to wander, and text impacts me in ways that an audio book doesn't for some reason.

A couple suggestions Bones:

"Starship Troopers"

Peeple mentioned "American Gods". It is exceptionally good.

Pratchett is always fun and whimsical, even when serious.

I saw "On the Beach" mentioned. "Lucifer's Hammer", "One Second After" and "A Canticle for Leibowitz" fit that genre well.

Scalzi's "Old Man's War" and Joe Haldeman's "Forever War" are good too.

Some good old school books there.

Better to read it but just finished John Wyndham's classic on audiobook - highly recommended.

I'll have to wait until I'm out from work to see what you posted. I'm guessing either "The Chrysalids" or "The Day of the Triffids"?

A few more suggestions:

Anything by Asimov or Arthur C. Clarke is a safe bet.

Alastair Reynolds' "Revelation Space" collection is fantastic. The world building and character development is nuts.

Neil Gaiman's "American Gods" has already been suggested but you might also check out "Good Omens". The play on duality makes for a fun, thought provoking read.

One more thought as I'm already throwing them out there. I started reading some of the Warhammer 40K books and, oh man, is that a rich, diverse world filled with twists and turns. I had to walk away from it after about 17 books in. It might be an indulgence you'd enjoy.

If anything else pops into my head I'll let you know. Good luck on your literary adventures my friend.
