I dont think this has had any visibility on ATS previously.

The idea is, litterally, interpret your Phd thesis through the medium of dance.

It's a real competition run by Science magazine for the last 15 years, with a $ prize even. From the YouTubes I've seen the entries get more sophisticated with every passing year.

I've included a link to the 2019 winner that danced "Social experiences in larval zebrafish and their brains".

I thought it was a good performance, presented well, fantastic chorography, however I'm not sure it was PhD worthy.

But that's up to the panel of examiners to decide.

Perhaps I'm jealous, I worked on my dissertation for 2 years plus an additional year for the MA.

Please leave crappy cringe videos out of science.
People with a Phd worked their asses of to get them. A video a 10 year old could have easily cooked up just doesn`t cut it - not even close.

Not really my type of stuff but pretty amazing people put the time and effort into their PHD then choreograph their research for the joy of an art form
Seems not all sciencie types are gamer nerds

I think the gig is they get a Phd first, then they make up a dance to it.

The dance doesn't count to the Phd.

All the same, like infographics make statistics acceessible I think this dance makes all the detailed hard work that goes into any thesis accessible.

Surely is a bizzar thing to see today, but in ten years time I bet a dance, or something akin to a dance, will be common place, if not expected.

The fact you have to explain that detail to some is quite scary in the big picture
Mind, don’t some artists get honorary doctorships 😬

What`s artistic about doing a crappy powerpoint show style youtube video?
Come on man, up your standards.
If you present this to me as a middle school project - ok then mediocre, but anything to do with real science?

I think you're missing the point. It started as a "dance off" between PHD students to explain their dissertations. Mostly for fun, but with a cash prize as well.

Here's the first official winner*.

From that to the video in the OP indicates the growth, and probably prestige, that this event has gone through.

That might explain why all the professionals started dancing everywhere when the pandemic began.

Were they trying to tell us something??? lol

If you look at the dance one about development of fish with social isolation it makes you think about all the kids isolated for two years of their life.
