Dividing people is the name of the game.

Black vs white, vaxxer vs antivaxxer, gender vs real gender?, catholics vs teachers, California vs everyone?

Once you understand the game they are playing you can exclude yourself from the game.

Or it could be that he knows he's fighting an uphill battle because of his race in a profession dominated by people who don't look like him and because of that he works that extra bit harder to excel and it is now paying dividends.
