Walmart has been limiting chicken, beef, fish and other items for over a year now. And some veggies as well. Usually limited to 3 item.
Do you live in a major city like NYC?
We have nothing like that here in middle america that I have seen.

The root cause is an actual food shortage being masked under the guise that people are just "buying too much" and need to be limited. Biden even made a gaff in his Ukraine speech about the "coming global food shortages".

Spanish weather has been cold the last few months it seems. -2 to 8c° from what I saw. So the only difference in location (UK or Spain) is the potential for UV exposure. I could check if it was cloudy too?
We do import from SA too although Brexit might actually have a knock on effect with that, plus energy prices. Has South Africa had a particularly dry Summer?
I imagine supermarkets in the UK are loathed to charge 2-3 times the price on items that people don't need. It's a tight market and I find it telling which stores aren't limiting purchases.

My wife doesn't drive and is particular about what she buys and from where.
So every Thursday I get to drive her around various shops, today has been no exception.
Today we started off at the local market where she regularly buys mainly local produce from small independent traders some of whom she is friends with.
Then it was to Morrisons followed by stops at B&M, Sainsburys, Lidl, Aldi and M&S.
No-one was actually being limited on how much they could buy of anything and no-one was panic buying.
It maybe be different elsewhere in the UK and things may change in the future but at the moment everything appears to be pretty much the same as usual where I live.
