Wow, apartments on top of Walmart. Can you imagine basically never having to leave home to buy whatever you might need in life? Lol

They do have apartments as close as possible to Walmarts. I'm sure those fetch high rent because of location.

My apartment is directly across the street from a 7-11 but that isn't so special. It would be better if it was a Wawa. Everything at 7-11 is overpriced and this one doesn't have gas pumps either. But I'm sure it's priced in.

But living above Costco and being the greeter till I croak is more likely at this point, LOL.

That would be the second question.
Would Costco employees even be able to afford to live there?

We have a Costco and newer apartments in the same shopping complex. The small apartments are more than my mortgage.

I suppose that would depend if Costco actually owned the apartments and ran it etc. I did look at the apartments across from Costco here and they were expensive as hell for what they were. Found one much nicer right down the road a few minutes.

still...

There is something to be said about the convenience, but Im pretty adaptable when I have to be. That said I almost signed a lease downtown right across from where I used to work. Ive always lived in the burbs, but the commute was getting to be too much and I really had turned into just being at work till I got exhausted and then going home. Hell sometimes Id get a hotel room nearby if I had to work on a weekend it just kept me from working from 7 in the morning till 11 at night and driving home for an hour and doing the same thing again at 6 in the morning the next day

Getting an apartment made sense on a lot of levels, but it was expensive as hell, and ultimately I didn't sign the lease.

So about a year and a half later, we start getting the riots over and over which I would have hated obviously then COVID, and boom I don't have across the street to work at anymore, LOL.

So now my dream is to get an acre or 2 in the mountains, a house or cabin, with a small office preferably separate from the house. I always thought I could achieve this by the time I was 60, but circumstances I might need to put the goal by the time I'm 70.

When I was in Alabama I lived near the UAB Campus. Down the street was a Bar with a laundromat attached. I loved it. Go toss the clothes in the washer, grab a beer and watch the ball game for a bit, toss them in the dryer, have another beer.

When on location out in the sticks, the production company provides trailers for the cast and crew and a fully staffed and equipped catering truck/kitchen, dining area. And over and above Union scale for the time away from the studio. Some of the "big" talent commute via helicopter along with their entourage. Big difference from working for the USGS, but at least they provided us sleeping bags and MREs.

On some indy projects it's all up to you. I have slept in my xterra for 19 days and ate my own groceries so I wouldn't have to commute the 75mi back to the nearest village. It was wonderful!!

Livin the dream!

I live on acreage with the most pastoral setting. It is brutal here in the winter, but during the spring, summer and fall, I count my blessings. You can’t see any houses from my backyard. It is totally private, that is just a feeling that’s hard to explain. It’s a life that you don’t have to escape from. I have a several gardens. Wildlife wander in and out of the yard. I watch the most beautiful sunsets. Roasting marshmallows by the fire. Picking apples from our giant apple tree. The steamy midsummer nights is when the action begins. Just as the sun sets the dragonflies do their dance. The fireflies emerge and put on a light show some can only dream of. The crickets serenade them. The frogs and toads guard the night. If you go out around 2am, you will see something so unbelievable, the stars almost kiss your face. It really feels like you can touch them. The country air, there is no sweeter air in the world. You can taste the streams and rivers nearby, mixed with wild bee balm, the fresh pine tips, and the sweet scent of prairie wildflowers.

Excuse the daydream longing for summer, I am 100% a country girl at heart. There is no way I could live on top of a Costco or any other building. I think it would be fun to visit, but to live that every day would be torture for my soul.

What is funny is when city people move out here and they feel the same way about all our bugs and critters and that it’s too quiet!

Used to travel all over the southeast I love the country and small towns, last time I went to the mountains it was cool in the evenings and just warm enough in the daytime, I slept on the deck at night it was so pleasant.

We don't get huge snows or even cold here, so our mountains are fine most times, but one of my favorite Thanksgiving was when we got fair snow in and were down in a holler in central Virginia. So quiet and so peaceful but my Dad taught me to appreciate the outdoors, he always took us hunting and we would stay in a ramshackle hunting lodge or find an old abandoned house that was prevalent on the land where we hunted. We always had a blast and hated having to go back home

It's hard to describe but as soon as I get to the mountains or even out in the rural country I can feel the stress level melt away.

Good point.

Near me a farm was razed and tons of apartments are going up. Heck, all over town tons of apartments are going up.

The rent for a one bedroom in any of them is nearly double my mortgage payment on a 4 bedroom house in a nice neighborhood - but I wonder for how long with all the apartments going up around my neighborhood.

How people can afford apartments is beyond me. I always save an amount equal to my mortgage for repairs so actually "spend" monthly about what a one bedroom rents for around me. But I can do whatever I want and have well over a thousand more square feet of living space and a garage for our cars to park in.

Apartment living is a total scam and ripoff. The rent is so high that people can't afford to save up the down payment for a house and are stuck paying twice as much for half the value.

This is how the elite class want us to live, hand to mouth, while they live like the Kings and Lords of old. Sort of reverting in the US to the old feudal system. Especially if Costco rents to employees.

This is what Democratic and liberal/progressive politicians seem to want for all of us peons, living equally poor, equally hand in mount, equally month to month, while the politicians live in mansions with every luxury possible. Then having the nerve to say that the equality they want to create is true equality for everyone (but really not for them, because they are wiser, smarter, more compassionate than the stinky peon masses and so deserve to live in the lap of luxury - because they created true equality for all).

*shudders*
Actually I avoid the malls etc. with a passion,
haven't been to a mall in years.
The freezer is full with the food I've grown,
the beauty of the out doors can't be beat,
God, I cann't understand these mall-rats, and
these addicted shoppers.
Hanging my laundry out in the fresh air,
bbq in the back yard, sun bathing,
WITHOUT the noise, prying eyes,
commercialism . . .
I couldn't ever handle living in
a 'shoe box' let alone above a mall,
I would feel like a prisoner.
But that's what us surfs have become,
prisoners. The middle class destroyed,
and under the authoritarian rule of those
in power.

Yep I envisage towering city blocks, Costco block, Walmart block, etc and sky bridges between them. Airport on top (or hover car deck) and an inner space hollowed out for vertical farming.

Aren't cities, like NY, filled with buildings that have stores on the street level and apartments above?

Only difference I'm seeing here is that it is a single store instead of a bunch of smaller shops.

I’m holding out for housing above what-a-burger or in-n-out. Actually , burger joint on first floor. Massage parlor / smoke shop on the 2nd. Beer distributor on 3rd. Then my penthouse on top

If this was the 12th century, I'd call it "Castling." It would certainly seem like Costco is trying to get ahead of the predicted "Great Fall" by taking in subjects at their stores for both defense and labor.

I grew up with having a yard at a house but I make the most of this. You'd be surprised how quickly you adjust if you have to. If I really wanted to grill I could, I'd just look kinda unusual, lol.

I walk everywhere so I get plenty of outdoors, albiet in the city. But the city is very interesting just like rural areas. You'd have to live in it to understand if you haven't had both.
