Mass Shooting Reported in Monterey Park, CA on seen Deputy says it an isolated incidence

Freelance news organization RMG News reported it happened apparently during a Lunar New Year celebration of the “Year of the Rabbit” downtown at a business at 122 W. Garvey Ave., near the intersection of Garvey and Garfield avenues.

A broadcast report said thousands of people had been attending the event. Later, police and emergency medical personnel were on scene as Monterey Park police investigated. Witnesses remained gathered at the scene late Saturday and roads in the area were closed.

It wasn’t immediately known how many people may have been struck by gunfire. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department homicide detectives were sent to the scene to assist.

The shooting occurred about 10:20 p.m., sheriff’s Deputy M. McClendon said.

It occurred about an hour after a city Lunar New Year festival in the area had ended.

“It is an isolated incident,” McClendon said. No suspect information was available.

Confirmed but not much info, yet.

Police are attending the scene of a shooting with multiple casualties in Monterey Park, California, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The number of casualties, exact location and time of the alleged shooting have not yet been confirmed by Monterey Park Police Department.

Journalist Christina Pascucci wrote on Twitter that the police department had confirmed to her that a "mass shooting occurred." Newsweek has contacted Monterey Park PD for comment.

Nothing going on in the Asian community that I know of. Except for the Chinese Lunar New Year which is a huge event celebrated worldwide. All remaining New Year events have been canceled in the area

Pretty sure whenever there is a high-profile local event like this the FBI almost always offers assistance FWIW the Monterey Police force has 75 police officers total for a city proper population of more than 30,000 people.

Yep and evidently this was the first year since COVID that they have had Chinese New Year festivities in Monterey.

sad but the same old story. i actually find it strange that the topic of "guns in american society" is discussed far too little and never controversially in this very patriotic and political forum. such crimes would be THE news in almost every country in the world, but in america it seems to be accepted almost emotionlessly. of course there are special broadcasts and blah blah blah the usual discussions that lead nowhere. but people seem to have become uninterested to it all. the two-party system is killing the society. it doesn't allow for a political middle, a healthy cross-section of political ideas. the system doesn't give progressive ideas a chance to adjust gun laws so that both sides and everything in between can live with it. that must be possible, right? because america obviously has a problem with gun abuse. but especially a problem with radical, religious, reactionary, overly moralistic and agenda driven politicians.

America has laws that are in place to make most shootings illeagle before the shooting occurs. Criminals don't follow the laws and some officials don't apply the laws they don't like. Many shooters were known to the FBI before they acted.

Mostly it is a problem with violence in general, guns just make it a little easier. If someone wants to kill, a knife or car will do.

The biggest problem is nooone in government discusses what can be done to help with the violence problem.

Fox news update. Suspect male is possibly Asian 30 to 50 years old, some conflicting description by witnesses though. He dropped the weapon as he ran off from the scene.

White cargo van is of interest because it was reported to have suddenly sped off from nearby area.

Still reporting 10 deceased and 10 injured.

Manhunt ongoing.

I wonder if this is like the attemped mass shooting at that church where the elderly Asians took the shooter down only losing one of their own in the process. Turned out it was Chinese/Taiwanese spillover. The shooter was Chinese and the people in the church were from Taiwan.

Given the politics, the story was dropped like a hot potato.
