Brazilian football legend Pele, arguably the greatest player ever, has died at the age of 82.

The only player to win the World Cup three times, lifting the trophy in 1958, 1962 and 1970, Pele was named Fifa's Player of the Century in 2000.

BBC.com, 12/29/2022: Pele: Brazil football legend dies aged 82.

Sad news about futbol legand Pele passing. He had colon cancer and it spread leading to “multiple organ failure” and death (same source).

I may have memories of the 70s World Cup but all these years later, it just may have been the replays of the fluid grace and enthusiasm that he played with that made me and an entire generation go and play soccer!

The name is legendary. The bicycle kick is immortalized by the man. The 70s soccer scene always had Pele somewhere nearby (or so it seemed to me)!

RIP, champ!

As a kid in the 70s, soccer wasn’t huge in American. We did know all about
Pele though, he was everywhere! God rest his soul, a hero to many!

RIP sir,

A great footballer to the end.

Such an icon.

I hope he wasn't in too much suffering.

Yeah, sad news but the suffering is just as sad.

There is the death with dignity argument in a nutshell. I don’t know which I would choose. Probably end it on my own terms. But that may not be what the family wants.

A tough, personal choice.

Thanks to all for the sharing!!

Artistry comes in many forms!

In High School we all couldn't stand when PE coach made us play soccer.
But every single one of us knew who Pele was.

He was hospitalized a week ago.

The family gathered and released a statement before Christmas about his health.

But hey, I have been in the middle of ME before so who am I to impose a timeline upon you!

JK!

He has been having issues for several weeks. And this was the day that he passed.

I knew this was coming and mentioned it in the World Cup thread, but it's still distressing and I feel the void. Pelé turned football into an art form; like a ballet dancer, he made it look easy and seamless, masquerading the effort he put into it.

R.I.P. Pelé
