A widespread state of emergency has been declared across Jamaica to fight violent crime, the island nation’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness said in a public address Wednesday.

“All Jamaicans should be able to enjoy the Christmas season free from the threat of violence. We have some really serious criminal threats facing us and we have to use all the powers at our disposal,” Holness said.

The State of Emergency (SOE) will be enforced in nine of Jamaica’s 14 parishes, including Clarendon, Saint Catherine, Westmoreland, Hanover and parts of Kingston, Saint Andrew, Saint Ann and Saint James, which encompasses the popular tourist destination Montego Bay.

Jamaican government takes emergency action over violent crime

in certain circles Jamaica is dismissed as a safe place full of lazy ganja-imbibing friendly natives. well, no.

someone described their two-party system as a leftist party and a far-leftist party

I wonder if they've been allowing criminals to go free like many US Democrats.

According to him, one goal of the gatherings is to try to break the connections between international members of the criminal underworld and those on the island, which frequently leads to killings and other forms of carnage.

Getting more intense cooperation in treating with the foreign actors in our local crimes,” according to Holness.

I wonder what sort of international crime Jamaica is involved in. Large-scale marijuana smuggling? I honestly don't know what else it might be.

It looks like firearms are the target here.
Reading around other articles, Jamaicans are allegedly trading Mj, coc aine and stolen food to Haitians for firearms via fisherman.

Damn, that's sad.

A serious hindrance to Jamaica's development has been slow rates of economic growth. In the past 30 years, Jamaica has had an average annual GDP growth rate of less than one percent. The slow growth rate is a major cause of persistent poverty in Jamaica.

They've finally had a gdp jump after the covid psyop killed their tourism industry over the last couple years, which is a substantial part of their gdp.
Probably the cause of the crime jump.

These small islands remind me of Disney in Florida.
...concentrated tourism surrounded by mass poverty.

I'm thinking because of this news that tourism dollars will again decline.

Tough telling, but they're back at or above pre 2019 numbers already.
