Sounds as if they did this in an abundance of caution, still would like to know more about the source of the email

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - A Sunwing Airlines flight, Flight 410 or Boeing 737, was diverted to Wilmington International Airport around 6 p.m. after the crew reported a passenger disturbance.

The flight initially departed from Toronto, Canada, and was en route to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.

According to a New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, during the flight, an anonymous email created a security threat. It is unknown at this point who sent or who received the email. The threat caused the airliner to land at the Wilmington International Airport, its closest landing option.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is going through security protocols to make sure there are no issues with the plane and are in the process of deplaning the passengers.

Sunwing Media has released the following statement:

“The safety and security of our passengers and employees is our top priority at Sunwing Airlines. On the afternoon of Tuesday, November 29, 2022, Sunwing Airlines was notified of a security threat related to an aircraft en route from Toronto to Puerto Plata. The airline initiated an immediate threat assessment as part of its emergency protocol and, out of an abundance of caution, diverted the aircraft to Wilmington International Airport where it landed safely on Tuesday evening. Passengers are being transported to a nearby hotel for the night and another aircraft is being brought into Wilmington to bring all passengers to Puerto Plata on Wednesday. We thank our customers for their patience and understanding during this unforeseen situation.”

This is a developing story that will be updated as more information becomes available.

They're angry about it too!

As with so much of what the Biden Admin does, the timing sucks. Busiest travel season, and Air Marshals are shifted from protecting Americans, to babysitting illegals.

Not the only diverted flight either.

Atlas Air Flight 5Y8380 originated in Topeka, Kansas and was on its way to Poland when it was diverted to O'Hare. The airline said there was a fire warning in the cargo area that prompted the emergency landing.

But inspectors didn't find anything.

The plane landed safely and the 300 soldiers on board deplaned and were seen climbing onto waiting buses with a huge emergency police and fire response.

"As a precautionary measure, Chicago authorities inspected the aircraft upon arrival and determined the aircraft was safe for all passengers to de-plane," Atlas said in a written statement. "Our team is investigating the cause of this incident and will work to safely return the aircraft to service."

False alert behind O'Hare emergency landing

A faulty sensor or a reason to land and check the flight? If the alarm called for a fire why did they inspect the plane before letting them off? Okay, there is no fire, but you still need to get off the plane? Just a guess, but maybe they got an email too.

They always check the aircraft first when there's a fire warning. The fire department uses infrared cameras to check the area where the fire warning originated, and if there's no heat detection, the aircraft taxies to the gate. It takes about five to ten minutes at most before the aircraft is heading to the gate. They don't evacuate for a simple warning, without evidence of fire. Those slides are expensive to replace, and can take a couple of days to replace them all. Out of all the times I saw an aircraft come back for a fire warning, first hand, there was one that was actually on fire. I saw quite a few come back with warnings too. Sensors tend to have faults more than people realize, and there's no fire involved. Newer sensors are dual detectors, meaning the false alarm rate will drop. But older aircraft are less likely to get them.

You'd be surprised how often someone pissed because they missed the flight, or mad at another passenger does this. Not saying it's common, but both of those are reasons I've heard behind emails or phoned in bomb threats.
