The welding sounds like it would work, if I knew how to weld. Though I do recall my mom having some mini-welding kit at some point, very small , glue gun size.

Was about to mention repair from either glue or epoxy.
Pretty sure my Dad fixed loads of stuff with JB Weld or something similar, I fixed a lawnmower once, and the handle broke again but on the opposite side of the first use, did it to the other side and the bastard is still working 10 years later. If you prep right and follow the directions it is indeed a quality product.
