You know, I wonder about that.

The Soviets certainly put up a convincing show that they were a competent force.

During the Cold War, their alert response times were in fact impressive. How much that speaks to how competent they were with other things, I don't know. We know a nuclear launch watch officer of theirs was competent enough to realize the alerts he was seeing were not real: thus, no World War 3.

I suspect the West will never know the truth as to how actual their competence was (or not).

Cheers

You're probably spot there Cavv, I said it sort of tongue in cheek being honest and realistic about it. The USSR in its heyday was a force to be reckoned with plus all the industrial and military achievements quite impressive. Sort of slipped a bit by the mid 80's with all the entanglement in Afghan plus effective sanctions through OPEC destroying the price of their staple exports carbons. Even in Afghan they left a stable governmeent in the cities under their control, they just couldn't tame the Pathans in the mountains like the Brits before them and the Yanks and others later

If Ukraine is shooting down such a large percentage of Russian missiles, then this does not bode well for them. This is because one of Russia's unique capabilities is being neutralised. It also gives a good insight into why the Russian air force has been largely impotent, and has not delivered "control of the air".

Ukrainian officials do not release pictures of the damage of power plants and substations because they do not want Russia to precisely see what impact the attacks are having but some facilities are acknowledged to have been destroyed."

Russia has military recon satellites that see the damage even if Ukrainians do not release any pictures.

For sure Russia has these satellites but do they actually use them or even are they in serviceable use? When one looks back at the Karkhov offensive, what on Earth were the Russian satellite personnel doing? They surely should have noticed a build up by Ukraine and advised Moscow to bring in reserves to counter the imminent Ukrainian advance. They must have noticed an 8/1 combat troops advantage to Ukraine on that front right? What was going on up there? The satellites must be borderline useless

The correct term would be had them. Notice Russian troops using radios instead of satellite coms? They cant even have reliable communication sats over Ukraine. As currently they are believed to only have 1 working radar satellite. And the resolution on their spy satellites isn't enough to see a vehicle with any detail meaning they have no idea what it is. Bottom line they neglected their satellites and now they are paying the price.

www.rferl.org...

For sure "had them" that is the correct term Dragonridr

I just can't get over how such a fall from grace has happened. I mean the Russian's got the first satellite into space, virtually every great space achievement came from them bar getting a man on the moon. What a fall that they can't see from space. It's just amazing. When I was a kid the USSR was so powerful and achievements came from that bloc all the time ins cience, engineering etc. In my short life time things have fallen apart. Then again when my mum was born Britain controlled the largest Empire the modern world has seen, now (and she's still alive) we can barely keep our own small island together. I guess it happens to everyone

Sounds like Kherson is going to be straight out of the Stalingrad playbook...................... www.theguardian.com...

"Vladimir Putin has warned that civilians still living in the Ukrainian province of Kherson, which Russia declared it had annexed in September, must be “evacuated” from the conflict zone, amid suggestions that Russian forces may be preparing to abandon the west bank of the Dnipro river.

The Russian president made the comments during a meeting with pro-Kremlin activists, underlining mounting speculation that Russia would attempt to hold the city of Kherson itself, the largest urban area under Russian occupation, at any cost."

I have the impression that Putin really needs a "heroic defense" to galvanize the support of the Russian people.

It will be interesting as, obviously, it isn't 1942 anymore. I expect there may be more advanced ways of city fighting than what the Germans did back then. But any approach will still cause a lot of destruction.

Cheers

Anticipate Uks are working on some method to lever the Russian out of Kherson without turning it into second Mariupol with
the resulting heavy casualties and destruction

Russians are poorly trained and suffering from poor morale Uks have shown to be inventive and may have a few tricks up their sleeve to avoid frontal assault on the city

Did you see the pic of the leader of the Ukrainian armed forces wearing a bracelet with a swastika

If you support Ukraine you are a Nazi supporter .

Nazis

Sorry, you’re behind in your improperganda
The new reference to describe Ukrainians is “Satanic cult” or in general terms, Satanists.
The whole Nazi claim didn’t work out, due to it being a reflection of Russian operational tactics. I.E. genocide kidnapping, rape, theft, cultural displacement.

Cheap plastic drones are becoming more of a player in modern warfare. Footage shows drones discover and enable destruction of various things like artillery, tanks, counter battery radars.

part 3

Did you see the Ukrainian made FPV racing drone experiment?
High speed, super maneuverable, flown directly into the horizontal opening of a dugout within a trench.

Anyone see turretless's latest update?

His training; hid in a trench when a tank rolled over it and threw a grenade.

I bet a lot of russian prisoners getting sent to war would be grateful-being under artillery fire every day is probably more "fun" than being in most russian prisons.
Always handy to have some nice empty prisons as well when people are protesting against the war.
Its win win..

The latest approved US equipment list has got some armored boats-what will they be used for, maybe the river by Kherson?
Also More tanks, drones and air defence systems-

Blood always spilled on someone else's soil

The IRA didn't attack England then ?

Birmingham
Warrington
London
Guildford
Brighton

And many others.

The Brits oppressed the Irish Catholics for centuries eventually pushing them into a mire. The IRA had no option but to regroup and go after the Brits who were already in a mire of their own making.

just like the Ukrainians are doing with the Russians. It's called self-preservation and a fight for Liberty.

4 November Update

* The Russian military is likely trying to use mobilized personnel to restart its Donetsk offensive but will likely fail to achieve operationally significant gains.

* Russian forces are setting conditions for an orderly withdrawal from the west bank of the Dnipro River to avoid a rout in Kherson Oblast.

* Russian sources claimed that Ukrainian forces continued counteroffensive operations in the direction of Kreminna and Svatove.

* Russian forces continued to prepare existing and new defensive lines in Kherson Oblast.

* Russian forces continued to conduct offensive operations around Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Donetsk City.

Difference is the Ukranians aren't terrorists intentionally killing civillians and the IRA mainly bombed Irish Catholics in the North West of England.

Boring Catholics were victims, blah, blah and IRA terrorist apologist. Tens of thousands of protestants were forced to leave the Catholic-paradise of the Republic of Ireland, a fact conveniently forgotten by the hand wringing history revisionists.

Anyhoo, back to topic, eh?

Ukraine has a good chance if they are out numbered 1 to 2. Being out numbered 1 to 4 is probably too big an odd. When Ukraine runs short on men the US will have to go to war with Russia.
