You know, I wonder about that.
The Soviets certainly put up a convincing show that they were a competent force.
During the Cold War, their alert response times were in fact impressive. How much that speaks to how competent they were with other things, I don't know. We know a nuclear launch watch officer of theirs was competent enough to realize the alerts he was seeing were not real: thus, no World War 3.
I suspect the West will never know the truth as to how actual their competence was (or not).
Cheers

If Ukraine is shooting down such a large percentage of Russian missiles, then this does not bode well for them. This is because one of Russia's unique capabilities is being neutralised. It also gives a good insight into why the Russian air force has been largely impotent, and has not delivered "control of the air".
Ukrainian officials do not release pictures of the damage of power plants and substations because they do not want Russia to precisely see what impact the attacks are having but some facilities are acknowledged to have been destroyed."
Russia has military recon satellites that see the damage even if Ukrainians do not release any pictures.
For sure Russia has these satellites but do they actually use them or even are they in serviceable use? When one looks back at the Karkhov offensive, what on Earth were the Russian satellite personnel doing? They surely should have noticed a build up by Ukraine and advised Moscow to bring in reserves to counter the imminent Ukrainian advance. They must have noticed an 8/1 combat troops advantage to Ukraine on that front right? What was going on up there? The satellites must be borderline useless
The correct term would be had them. Notice Russian troops using radios instead of satellite coms? They cant even have reliable communication sats over Ukraine. As currently they are believed to only have 1 working radar satellite. And the resolution on their spy satellites isn't enough to see a vehicle with any detail meaning they have no idea what it is. Bottom line they neglected their satellites and now they are paying the price.

Anyone see turretless's latest update?
His training; hid in a trench when a tank rolled over it and threw a grenade.

I have the impression that Putin really needs a "heroic defense" to galvanize the support of the Russian people.

Blood always spilled on someone else's soil
The IRA didn't attack England then ?
Birmingham
Warrington
London
Guildford
Brighton
And many others.
* The Russian military is likely trying to use mobilized personnel to restart its Donetsk offensive but will likely fail to achieve operationally significant gains.
* Russian forces are setting conditions for an orderly withdrawal from the west bank of the Dnipro River to avoid a rout in Kherson Oblast.
* Russian sources claimed that Ukrainian forces continued counteroffensive operations in the direction of Kreminna and Svatove.
* Russian forces continued to prepare existing and new defensive lines in Kherson Oblast.
* Russian forces continued to conduct offensive operations around Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Donetsk City.

The Brits oppressed the Irish Catholics for centuries eventually pushing them into a mire. The IRA had no option but to regroup and go after the Brits who were already in a mire of their own making.
