Adult Happy Meals are stressing McDonald's employees out

How bad is it that GROWN adults are lining up for a subpar meal just so they can have a “toy”?

We know this isn’t about fast food, or the toy. This is about some deep seated childhood trauma.
I hate to say it but Gen X, this is our fault, and I know what happened…..

Back in the day, our parents (the boomers) didn’t let us eat at fast food very much. It was truly a special occasion to go to
McDonald’s or Burger King. It was goooooooood too. French fries fried in pure beef tallow, Lord have Mercy!!!!! So crispy and flavorful.
Then there was the apple pies fried in the same fat. The burgers actually looked normal and came in styrofoam. I swear that added to the taste.
We also got an itty bitty soda and boy was that a treat. We didn’t get soda every day, or every week, it was truly a rare special treat.

Then us Gen X’ers grew up and fast food was cheap, and we were mad our parents were so stingy and selfish. We could eat this stuff anytime we wanted to. When we had our own kids, we would get them a happy meal and it was no big deal. Maybe we bought them too much. We were so busy working and there wasn’t much time to cook. Our kids sure did love those happy meals. Then the toys, they got better and better and better.
Soon some of those toys were worth a fortune (seriously how stupid was that?) Then adults would try to get in on the toy collecting action. These kids meals were imprinted on millennials brains are something worth much more than what they really are.

Now here we are, grown adults wanting to relive the nostalgia…

It speaks volumes for the society we now live in , there and over here.

The French fries were fried in sheep fat. See Love's corporate biography on McDonald's, Behind the Arches. The R&D was intense. That's why McDonald's revolutionized the potato, dairy, bakery, and beef industries.

That being said, I cannot respect people who buy any kind of Happy Meal for a toy.

Grow up already.

Hey now.

If the toy is awesome I'm not above getting a Happy Meal.

I'm 47 and I've suffered enough.

I won't get an "adult" happy meal because that just sounds pornographic, and the "toys" are ugly.

Kid's Happy Meal is fine with me.

Plus I usually leave the toy outside in the courtyard for the neighborhood kids to find.

I'm pretty sure I never ever bought my kids Happy Meals. Not even once. Their Nana bought them plenty, but I never did. And as adults, they don't like fast food.

Curious to see the replies though...

Sure but we have to question WHY as a society.

Why would a grown adult want something that was created for a child?

The whole purpose of a happy meal and a toy was to entice children to eat their meal and they would be rewarded with a toy. I’m sure there is a link between rewards and food contribute to obesity and eating disorders.

I’m really into food of other cultures. I have to say, we are doing something terribly terribly wrong here in the US.
We are literally killing ourselves and our children one bite at a time.

I bought them more than I like to admit when they were young but that changed as they got older. At some point I couldn’t even stomach anything from the big chains because it tasted like poison to me, I could literally taste chemicals.

Luckily my kids got a lot of home cooked meals and they prefer that to fast food any day.

Because we live in a capitalistic society.

Firstly, see above. It's their money, they can spend it as they see fit. Secondly, this is marketed for adults, not children.

I like my vitamins in gummy form. I had no idea that was wrong.

Uhm sounds like a gorilla marketing campaign to build demand. Having said that and observing how society is getting closer to idiocracy each and every day, I wouldn't be surprised if its real .

I fall into the millennial group who can recall the craze around the Happy meal toys from the first Men in Black movies man everyone wanted to get the neurolizer. Pizza Hut did a pretty successful starwars ep1 pog campaign and believe Burger King even did gold plated pokimon cards.

My kid (14) gets fast food once a week. Whichever coupon has the best deal.

Of course, he's fascinated with the Adult Happy Meal -- and wants me to have one.

But, no coupon yet

what does actual content created for children look like these days? every time I see a cartoon or toy announced its seemingly debated and discussed by adults.

"Right team sales are down, hit me with some ideas to get them back up again"

"hey boss, we could do adult happy meals, I bet loads of people would go for that just for the novelty and there's also the collector market!"

"Bob your a genius, take the rest of the week off and a 10k bonus"

The end.

Why an adult would want something created for a child is no one else's concern but their own. That being said, this is all marketing from Mcdonald's and nothing else. I've seen the toys in question; they are certainly not made for kids; they're nostalgic callbacks to the types of toys you would have gotten as a kid but with a weird twist. They've partnered with a company called Cactus Plant Flea Market, which, if you look at their other merchandise lampoons McDonald's a bit, so there's a very good chance that McDonald's saw this and went, "Hey, maybe folks will buy our crappy food because we know how to poke fun at ourselves," turns out they were right, and people are lining up for it. As for why folks do it, no one's business but their own.

Certain Happy Meal toys from days gone by are worth serious dinero.

Collectors markets are insane.

If the toy is a bottle of tequila, I'll buy it.
