Are YOU somebody?

Then you gotta REACT!

And it's all a test... a game... you gotta impress!!

Dramatic, animated, this isn't a game you gotta perform!!!

If you're not attempting to be the new emoji as you go about it, you're a LOSER!!!!

Or at least that's how we're all being corralled up anymore anyways. It's even in the "news" shows, hey so and so guest "what;s your reaction" to such and such, they ask.

Okay, fine, reaction style. Well where did that start, oh, "Youtube".

And now, it's clear: the Emojification of Society. Because those people I mean how many of them aren't [i]already emoji's???

Go YouTube right now, "reaction", and you tell me.

Have fun, or else!

Huh? Not trying to be disrespectful, but that didn't really make any sense to me. You're going to have to explain that in a different way, or elaborate a little more.

It's the laziest easiest way for 'content creators' to make content, steal other content.

Ah, Newton's 3rd law of motion.

Seriously though, emoji's aren't a new thing.

Take hieroglyphs for example. They're tools to tell stories such as myths, legends, history and memoirs. It's the drive of man to pass on knowledge, leave a legacy, find their place in the world and to put life into perspective. We all react to experience.

Your YouTube example is moreso a byproduct of capitalism. Vlogging, reviews, reaction videos, are made for the sake of "content".

Turning oneself into a brand and establishing a parasocial connection with an audience for a low effort payday and a chance at stardom.

Who would want to work a normal 9 to 5 job when you have an opportunity to make more money by staying home and acting like a goofball?

America's #1 export is entertainment and with the advent of platforms such as YouTube and Tik Tok, regular people, finally have an opportunity to achieve their goals without having to fit into a pre established mold or be fed to the Hollywood machine.

In actuality it's our culture to behave this way. I'd say a majority of Americans either idolize or fantasize about being a celebrity ever since the golden age of cinema.

The only way I could see a counter to this mindset would again involve capitalism. Scientists and teachers would have to be paid more than athletes and movie stars, creating an environment where proaction is rewarded more than reaction.

This thread reminds me of the remake of Fahrenheit 451 a few years back.

Not sure what else to say. Can this thread be a meme?

Kimmel on late night does a street sketch. A guy with a microphone goes out to the street to ask passersby a question concerning some recent event, like a sports game or any such thing. Like the ''Grammys or Oscars''.He asks if they saw the event on TV and if he gets a ''yes '' answer, then goes ahead and asks them a specific question about what they thought about a specific thing that happened. Only he asks about something that DIDN'T HAPPEN.

So eager are they to have this microphone in their faces, to have their faces on TV, to be someone, to have an opinion about something, to express their thoughts, that they make up lies on the spot. The guy with the mic then goads them on with further questions along the same line and the lying continues building and building false stories. It's amazing.

I really hate those "Man on the Street" type clips. I can't stand being embarrassed for others. It just makes me cringe.

We saw one once where they asked random people why we celebrate the 4th of July. None of the people they showed had any idea. But one girl -- probably early 20s, on the beach -- took the cake. She thought it was to celebrate summer. When she was told why we actually celebrate it, she got so angry and went into a tirade about how that was HER opinion and her opinion was just as valid as anyone else's opinion. Even the guy with the mic was pretty shocked. Not by her answer itself but her reaction when told the real reason.

People do funny things when they don't want to be wrong in front of millions of people, eh?

I hope reaction videos are the death of youtube. they're so bad. I think they started out from that one channel that would show people clips and get their reaction, or feed them strange foods from another country. But now its devolved into people filming themselves sitting for an hour in silence while they watch a video mostly emotionless and without commentary. And then you got this trend where all the thumbnails are people making their best c--k sucking face. It's all trash. Elon Musk needs to buy it from google after twitter closes.

There are the ones that just demonstrate how selected people don't know specifics about history or government and such, stuff some of us take knowing for granted. And of course only the clips that show people who don't know the answers make the clips. Those were of course for laughs but more I think. It demonstrated to the viewers their own superiority. ''Haha, look at the dummies, and mostly look at the youth . Shows watched mostly by older people shaking their heads at the younger generation. That was pretty simple fare. And for some of us a sad thing to watch.

Your example though is educational. The ones that I described are also, for any who want to learn about what makes us tick. Who want to take the time to think about it. Another, put on by the Fallon people has the interviewer on the street asking questions about popular topics as well only this one has the guy asking questions while mispronouncing the topic he is asking about. Not only mispronouncing but down right mangling. And again, the clips of people chosen to air do not notice that the very thing they are being asked about is being mispronounced so completely. It's like they get the idea in their heads about what they are being asked and then quit listening while they formulate their answers for the audience.

Oh dear... I suppose they may not want to be rude and correct the person... but that's not much better really. And, as you pointed out, the producers are going to pick the most embarrassing and cringeworthy clips to air. I'm not even sure why people (ETA: don't see that and still) do it. I'd probably be suspicious and avoid them!

Having said that though, I did once win a K-Mart gift card for being able to name all seven Dwarves... fortunately I didn't avoid him!

I suppose my fascination with this genre comes from a personal experience long ago. I was sitting at a bar having a few and a guy came up and sat down next to me. We chatted a bit and then he told me he was a ''roving reporter'' for a sports page in the local paper. He wanted to know if I would do a ''man on the street'' bit and I said sure. He asked me what I thought about OJs season and what did I predict about how it would go that season for him.

I wasn't following his career at that point but sat there making up a bunch of stuff like I was putting in ''filler'' to flesh out a term paper for lit class. He took my picture and it went into the paper with what I had said. My family made a big deal out of it but I felt so fraudulent for it all. My words were a lie and it went out to the whole town. My fifteen minutes of fame and it was all bullshlt.

So here I am, making up stuff to post on ATS and while much of what I post may be bullsh't, at least I don't lie.

That's quite the experience to have... and therefore quite the perspective to have on this all. I can understand your fascination.

You said you weren't particularly following OJ that season, so were you able to answer with just a basic knowledge of football and stats and players? Don't be too hard on yourself, since you were the one who got in the report, your answer was probably more reasonable and thoughtful than others he'd already heard! And probably a little different/better than some of the cookie-cutter answers he was used to getting.

I think that's what fascinates me (and disappoints me) most about so much of the public "reaction" we read to anything and everything. Bubbles and echo chambers aren't just found in politics. So much of what I read across the web is all the same. There might be two "sides" to anything, but people stick to one or the other. There's so little pondering and musing outside the checked boxes these days.

They should learn how to lie better. Saying they don't remember a specific instance after already saying they've seen it gives them plausible deniability.

I wonder if there ever has been. I think it's worth consideration that '' Bubbles and echo chambers '' is our default state of being making any capacity for individual thought a real challenge.

Well... I guess if you're speaking in terms of people being too lazy or too arrogant or too beat down to think outside the box, then I have to agree with you. It does seem to be the default in society these days.

But in terms of our natural state of being, I have to disagree. We are naturally curious and adventurous and inquisitive. We see things or hear things or smell things and want to know more. We want to explore and experiment and just play around with things and ideas.

All these labels and boxes are un-natural and contrary to our natural state of being.

And it's a whole lot more fun living outside boxes!!!
