I can't.

I'm in an all work and no play environment.

Sorry to hear that your work requires such spartan conditions.

Perhaps blue-blocker glasses might help for the last hour of work,
and no looking at screens 60 minutes before bedtime ?

Probably better to not look-at screens upon waking, if one wants to go-back to sleep.

When I used to work nightshift, ten hour shift, I usually only got three or four hours of sleep and did alright. But then on the weekend, I would sleep twelve hours one night and maybe eight the second, and I did not go downhill too bad. You need to get that one long sleep at night to keep up at least once every seven days or maybe a tad bit more.

When I was young I seemed to only get about five hours a night of sleep because of work and partying. But again, I needed one make up long night of sleep at least once a week too. I can't seem to do well with just five hours of sleep anymore for more than two days, I get worn out now, two good nights of sleep and I am up and active again though. Six to seven hours is my usually regular needed sleep these days, I have always liked six to seven hours...I work best that way.

Try “binaural beats”.

Get one that takes you to delta wave area. It should “ramp down” to that state.

First, see if a “meditation” or “coffee break” program works. It teaches you how to track the sound and how well you can track to it. If you can track, then go for the sleep program.

You should be able to find the sound only programs online. I have a light-sound machine that syncs LEDs with the sound and works so well that I don’t need to use it anymore!

Thanks for all the thoughtful suggestions guys, I really appreciate it.

I started limiting my caffeine intake and pushed it back a couple of hours.

When I start to feel like I'm getting drowsy I take off my jacket and go for a walk in the cold.

Works like like a charm.

Today I got 5 hours of sleep and I feel like a new person.
