Because when the National Archives asked for Trump to return the classified documents that were in his possession he didn't comply. As a result, the National Archives sent people to MAL to collect the documents. But now it would seem that Trump didn't turn over all the documents and so the DOJ has stepped in.

Imagine if Trump self-sabotages his own campaign before it even gets started simply because he was too lazy or something to return some documents.
