Seems Faslane is the place to be if you are a submarine these days , two more US subs turned up this week.

Two American submarines arrived on the River Clyde in Scotland this week on routine visits, marking a significant increase in allied submarine activity.
It’s not rare for American submarines to visit but this level of activity is rare. It’s rarer still for the visits to be publicised but that didn’t stop the U.S. Navy issuing a press release for the arrival of the USS Rhode Island, the first American Trident missile carrying submarine to visit Faslane since 2019, at the start of last month.

Of course there have been more visits but these are only the ones that the public are aware of due to the time of their arrivals in broad daylight.

Earlier in the year, nuclear submarines from three countries were berthed in HMNB Clyde at Faslane near Glasgow in Scotland.
The American submarine was of the Virginia class and the French submarine was of the Rubis class.

HM Naval Base Clyde – commonly known throughout the Navy as Faslane – is the Royal Navy’s main presence in Scotland. It is home to the core of the Submarine Service, including the nation’s nuclear deterrent, and the new generation of hunter-killer submarines.

Guess there must be a submarine festival or something going on.

Rumor has it they are looking for they new russian sub Belgorod. It is supposedly somewhere in the north sea/atlantic ocean. Obviously the US wants to keep an eye on it and learn about her and we know she is in the waters on deployment...just not where yet, as the rumor goes.

Question for all you knowledgeable submarine folks. USA submarines are all mostly nuclear powered from what I read. Chinas submarines are all mostly diesel.

Are the nuclear subs far superior compared to diesel subs? Louder? Easier to locate?

Yes and yes. But the difference is not great. A nuclear sub can remain submerged as long as they have fuel for the reactor (they refuel at something like 20-25 years). The limiting factor on a nuke boat is food. A diesel boat has to occasionally surface to replace air, and has to meet a tender to take on fuel.

But, a nuke boat has to constantly keep water going through the reactor cooling system, so there are always mechanical noises. They’re extremely quiet, and difficult to detect without good sonar and operators, but they’re there. A diesel boat going quiet has nothing to cool, so no mechanical noises, no matter how good your sonar and operators are.

It basically boils down to what your navy is using then for. A brown water navy is going to run diesel boats. A blue water navy, with long patrols will run nuclear. That’s one reason China is developing more nuclear boats. They want to become a true blue water navy.

China has a long way to go. Their boats are rattle-traps, very noisy, which is good for us.

I love a good Scottish protest, they get all uppity lifting the front of their kilts and laughing.

As to the rapey comment... Seems it been about 10 years since your Japanese rape thing happened, then before that was like 25 years. Yep don't let the sailors rape your women...lol

For along time sailors were not allowed to leave their ships due to the amount of rapes and assaults committed by them.

It's common knowledge and we'll documented.

Why do you think there are so many protests about the stationing of us troops.

He'll a third of army women report rape and assaults by their own colleagues. Again, well documented.

Big rape culture is the US militaries.

They have a very long way to go. Having blue water ships doesn’t make you a blue water navy. They still have to learn how to use them effectively and create doctrine.

USA subs are ALL nuclear powered. The last diesel was decommissioned in 1990. I worked on the Trident program (the "boomers") and live near one of their major bases. The boomers, especially, are very, very quiet and hence difficult to locate, which is rumored to be a major reason for the end of the Cold War. The details, of course, are classified, and in this case the details DO matter. They are "superior" to diesel in that they have an unlimited range, make their own oxygen and fresh water (so could diesels), and therefore can also stay submerged indefinitely. The only constraint is food. They will endeavor to stay undetected by anyone, including allies and even their own US Navy "skimmers" (surface ships.)

As the posters on base all say, "There are two kinds of ships in the world: Submarines and targets."

Forgive me, I live 40 miles from this base. I've never felt protected. The opposite actually.

No place for these weapons in any society.
