Researchers at the UK’s National Physical Laboratory have found the Earth is “spinning faster than normal”, which makes days shorter than usual.
The "Time Keepers", since we started using Atomic Clocks, have seen a steady slow down of the earths rotation, with only short spans of increased rotation.
They make up these difference in rotation (from the earths rotation slowing) by adding Leap Seconds to the world's clocks, and have added leap seconds 27 times since 1972.
The last additional second has been introduced on 1 July 2012, at 0hUTC.
hpiers.obspm.fr...

They have always added Positive Leap Seconds, because the Earth's Rotation has always been slowing, for the most part.
Up until 2019/2020.
In 2020, scientists recorded the 28 shortest days since 1960. Last year that trend did not continue, with the shortest day in 2021 being longer than in the previous year.
We set a new record this year, on June 29, 2022 our planet completed its quickest-ever spin, Earth's spin was completed in 1.59 milliseconds under 24 hours.

www.space.com...

If this trend continues they may have to add the first ever, negative leap second. That could cause some problems for the current technology we use.
"Y2K", remember that scare?
Many feel this may have the actual affect they thought Y2K would. Adding negative leap seconds will cause havoc with IT systems.
According to reports, Earth’s fastening rotation could have major consequences on atomic clocks, which are used in GPS satellites. It won’t take into account the Earth’s changing rotation.

This means that GPS satellites—which already have to be corrected for the effect of Einstein's Theory of Relativity — will quickly become useless.

Apart from that, smartphones, computers, and other communications systems will render useless as they are synchronised with Network Time Protocol (NTP) servers.

Since the clock progresses from 23:59:59 to 23:59:60 before resetting to 00:00:00, a time jump like this can crash programmes and corrupt data.

The tile system they use for GPS has more flexibility built in than is known.
Very likely local tiling correction as well as global.
This is just a very predictable walk as the longitude slowly shifts it will be corrected.

And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.

Just thought I’d throw this in for fun 😁

Ok so lets go back to old analog tech , who needs these gadgeds anyway ( typing from one ) I love old type analog phones too..

*MINDBLOWN*

There's a lot of deep science going on in that post. I remember Y2K, I was 20 years old and looking forward to the doom porn before I was let down. Maybe something like that is needed in this day of effed up media and smart phones.

1) The Earth "wobbles"
2) Gravity fluctuates .

Disclaimer : and I am not a "physicist"

As an IT guy who made bank when Y2K happened, I fully support having IT people test systems to verify they will work in this rugged new environment.

It's all about safety......

So, you don't think they can just set the time on everything on the internet?

What do you think happens when the power goes off and comes back on?

Whoever wrote that article has no technical understanding of navigation, communication, orbital mechanics, etc....

The speed of the Earth is varyimg all the time. What do you think the tides do?

This does prove global warming is false. If the ociens are rising, the planet would slow down more even if the land were to rise along with the sea. Figure scaters demonstrat this when they slow their spin speed by extending their arms.

Hmm. I dont think i believe in time.

I mean after all, we are all just projections inside a hyperdimensional sarcophagus.

I read somewhere that at the current rotation speed it would take until 2038 before it really becomes an issue.
By then all the 32 bit storage units should be upgraded anyway.
It is known as the Y2k38 or the "Friday the 13th" bug......
Or maybe what I read said adding negative leap seconds would quicken the Y2K38 bug...

Ima go look for the article...

I will play nice today,. This is not the Mud Pit, so I will refrain, for now.
I didn't mention Global Warming.
I did not mention my opinion.
I just brought something to ATS that I thought was interesting and others would like to read as well.

Calm down and breath, my friend.
Everything will be OK.

Greetings,

Time is so weird and hard to think about.
Let’s say for every day, for 1000 years, our days were cut shorter by 2ms. That means after 500 days, our day has been permanently been cut shorter by 1 second. After 365000 days on earth (1000 years), with a 2ms shorter day, everyday, the days would be 730 seconds shorter, or a little over 12 minutes.

I love just theorizing about space time and the inner workings of our universe. Maybe we are in the vicinity of a black hole in our solar system? As we know, black holes distort space time around them because of their large mass. Maybe someone has figured out a way to time travel, and this is how they’re testing their machine, as to not alert anyone? Or maybe our universe is finally contracting, squeezing everything closer together? (very slowly of course, I mean just look at how long our universe seemingly expanded for)

In reality, I think we are far from understanding how space time operates. What’s causing this phenomenon may be a mystery, but this just reminds us how ancient our technology seems to the vast workings of the universe.

It's not very sudden. Suspicious0bservers has actually been tracking this for the last two years. Old news.

Why is Earth speeding up?

There are many suggestions but no conclusive proof as to why Earth is spinning faster. Some of the hypotheses include:

1. Loss of the weight at poles due to melting of glaciers

2. Ocean tides caused by seismic activities

3. Moon's gravitational pull

4. The 'Chandler wobble' effect – as Earth is not perfectly spherical, which results in small deviation in its axis of rotation

"We don't know the cause of the acceleration of Earth's rotation. We have only hypothesis concerning the cause," said Christian Bizouard, from the Paris Observatory at International Astronomical Union.

"We assume that the cause is internal and lies in the movement of Earth's core. The crust which is linked to geological time scales, slides over the mantle and it is commonly assumed that the time variation is caused by this core-mantle interaction," he told CGTN.

"But we have only a speculative model of this theory based on the motion of the core," he added.

Not Mentioned in the Article is that Our Solar System is Moving into Different Regions of Space too . That Can also Have an Effect on Earths Rotation .

Hmmmm...
Maybe read just a little more than the title?
From OP:

We set a new record this year, on June 29, 2022

You need to calm down and breath as well....
What the hell is wrong with people?

Yes, I have been reading on this.
It may very well play a part in our global warming as well.

Also, there has been an increase in the number of fat bottom girls in the world. Naturally, rotation will increase.
