“I humbly beg forgiveness for the evil committed by so many Christians against the Indigenous peoples,” Francis said.

Pope Francis issued a historic apology Monday for the Catholic Church’s cooperation with Canada’s “catastrophic” policy of Indigenous residential schools, saying the forced assimilation of Native peoples into Christian society destroyed their cultures, severed families and marginalized generations.

Today the Pope issued a long awaited apology the the Indigenous people living in Canada for the role Christians and the Church played in the forced assimilation into Christian society.

This has been a controversy that has boiled over into violence in recent years. So it is a nice gesture on the part of the Pope ... time will tell if the apology is enough to erase some of the wrongs that have been committed.

I'm not a Christian nor an Indigenous person so I have a hard time relating to either side in this story. How do you feel about this apology?

Please don't confuse the Church Of Rome with Christians.

The Church has killed more Christians throughout history than any other organization on earth.

The Pope doesn't seem to be making a distinction.

The Church Of Rome was in Rome at the time, not Canada. It was the Christians living in Canada at the time who carried out the actions the Pope is now apologizing for and calling evil.

He didn’t have to do anything, so I respect the fact that he did this.

There is nothing the Pope can do to change the past. To acknowledge the problems around this big coverup is a step in the right direction.

When Other Christians in Europe were being enslaved by other Empires, the Catholic Church refused to assist.

Oh please! United States Protestants were perfectly complicit in kidnapping and torturing indigenous people's children in the USA.

As the loathing for the indigenous people dramatically increased in the late 19th-century, intellectual reformers proposed to Congress a special and compulsory form of education to reshape the new generation of American Indians, forcibly assimilate them into the “civilized’’ society. This option was an alternative to the extermination that was already taking place towards American Indians. It was a more “humane’’ way for European Americans to get rid of the Indian “problem.” And so, they did. In 1877, the American government legalized the compulsory education of indigenous minors at the newly-built residential schools. Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania was one of the first residential schools opened by the government in 1879.

I don't see the word Protestant in your quote any where. Besides people
claiming they are Christians without following Jesus's teachings simply
aren't Christians. And that includes the Pope in his Satanic throne with
his graven images and blend of paganism.

El Popo knows if you want a bike it is more effective to steal a bike and pray for forgiveness than it is to just pray for the bike in the first place.

Nothing new. It's a recurring theme wherever the catholic circus traveled.

All Christens that aren't Catholic are Protestants, meaning they broke from the Catholic Church as Martic Luther did during the Reformation.

The USA has enjoyed anti-Catholic sentiment and distrust from the time of the 13 Colonies until John F Kennedy was elected the first Catholic President in 1960. Before that, the idea that a Catholic could put America and its constitution above their loyalty to The Pope pretty much kept Catholics out of public office.

Sure, there were a few Catholics statesmen and rich white Catholic men elected to public office, but they were few and far between. There certainly weren't enough to sway Congress on how any issue, one way or the other.

The Pope and his “church” were feeling the heat, just like with their pedo priests and the Romas.

Dragging an apology out of someone isn’t exactly an apology. The indigenous people have waited decades and decades and hat to travel to the Vatican to solicit this apology.

It’s all for show and the Natives are suckers for falling for it. They should stay as far away as possible from that old man and his organization.

That is not correct.

Orthodox.

And many non denominational Christians today that aren’t affiliated with any church.

The Church is the body of Christ not some organization or building.

And that old man sitting in the Vatican like the others before him have absolutely nothing to do with the Christianity of the Bible.

It isn't correct because you're using labels to legitimize your argument
when I've already told you how a true Christian follows Christ his word
and his teachings. So you can blame Catholics or protestants for every
and anything you want. But the solid defined truth of the matter is.
You're no better than Nero blaming Christians and further more you
example perfectly the type person it took to crucify Christ.

Citation? The holy Bible is all you need.

Orthodox.

Like Russian and Eastern Orthodox?

Russia has a permanent representative to the Holy See based in Rome. As the Russian Orthodox Church is the largest organization of Eastern Orthodoxy, Holy See–Russia relations partly reflect Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church relations

Okay. But those denominational Christians are free to claim non-denominational status due to Protestant Reformation. The Church of England was created in the wake of reformational protests against the Catholic Church. The Pilgrims and our Founding Fathers hailed from England and they came here out of protest against religious authoritarianism and intolerance.

The Church is the body of Christ not some organization or building.

That has nothing to do with what the Catholic Church and a prominently (Christian) Protestant US Congress did to American ingenious people and their children.

The fact is Christians, both Catholics and Protestants, were directly responsible for kidnapping and torturing ingenious people's children.

The ultra real super duper truly true fact is, that's just your
negative biased line of thinking that fits your silly narrative.

There is no history for it and certainly no excuse.
