I second the Bosch nomination.

I have had everything else, including higher end Kitchen Aid and they ALL broke

Bosch has been solid, reliable, quiet , washes great.

Ok, I think I'm about ready to suggest to the wife we give it a try...

Thanks to all for the suggestions!

Are your kids old enough to do dishes?

They make excellent dishwashers.

Lol! I was telling the wife I'll be glad when the oldest is old enough, although she's about there (7, turns 8 in Dec)...

The only problem is... I really, really hate the idea of eating off dirty dishes.

On the actual topic I have never seen a mechanical dishwasher that actually cleans dishes.

Yeah, I know, thats been my experience too. Thats why I basically just use it as a sanitizer.

That is not actually sanitizer bro but I get it.

They don't

Anyway, does anyone have any recommendation for a decent dishwasher?

Which immigrants and from which countries have you not tried?

I did say a sanitizer - meaning, the high temp hot water.

Get on Craigslist and find an old whirlpool. The kind that actually used water to clean.
It would take 30 minutes to do a load and hands down could clean better than anything out there today.

My daughter is on her third dishwasher in life five years. She buys the expensive ones with all the electronics plus buys the extended warantee and they are always breaking down. Our old dishwaher still works, just needs to have a little hose replaced that leaks, it is thirty three years old, we quit using it because we are retired about three years ago knowing that most new ones do not last over six years. I guess they are all junk now just like most washers, dryers, and fridges are...lasting only around seven years according to the people who repair them. The repair man at my daughters told me there are no good appliances anymore that last fifteen to twenty years, all are made really cheap and parts are hard or impossible to get after six years. So, the dishwasher is now a wine bottle holder plus I keep the vaccum sealer in it too.

Let me bring in my 'expertise'... I've been selling dishwashers for 20 years.

1) the average life span of a dishwasher these days is 6 years.
2) the eco programs on them are crap. The temp is to low to really clean the dishes.
3) always put the top rack in the highest position so the lower arm is higher above the plates and rinses better
4) use either the all in one tabs, or manually fill the salt...never both.
5) every machine has 'secret settings' so you can adjust every program to your wishes, you can find how to access the settings on the net.

6) my professional opinion is that Bosh and Siemens are the best brands on the market, in Europe at least. (Bosh is a sub-brand from Siemens, not sure how available the brands are in the US) I have a Siemens, because they have the 3rd tray. You can choose a basic model, which is much cheaper and only has basic options, but you still keep the better quality.

7) If you can find it, choose one that has an 'auto' program. These machines have sensors that measure the amount of fat that is left in the water, they will always adjust the program, temperature, time and rinsing, until the water is fat-free. It's the only program I use.

Let me know what you chose

Wow. I wish I could find someone with your knowledge when I go appliance shopping. Most of the 'help' has been very average.

Cheers

If you ever need advice feel free to ask.

I refuse to use 'hard sales' techniques and rather sell my customers exactly what they need and what they can afford (not what they want). As a result they keep coming back, eventually bring along the kids, grand kids.... the only way to compete with big companies is honest sales. Both me and my husband, we like to do our job this way
