China reportedly displayed another alarming leap in space-based technology and capabilities this week after an analytics firm claimed to observe a satellite "grab" another and pull it from its orbit.

China’s Shijian-21 satellite, or SJ-21, disappeared from its regular position and reappeared while making a "large maneuver" to move closer to a dead BeiDou Navigation System satellite. The SJ-21 then pulled the BeiDou out of its orbit and placed it a few hundred miles away in a "graveyard orbit" where it is unlikely to interfere or collide with active satellites.

I figured someone would develop an anti-sat sat that could shoot pellets or something
never thought of physically manhandling. maybe uses too much fuel for frequent use?

not happy to see Chin able to do this

Direct response to Elon's starlink satts being seen as problematic in the event of a future invasion of Taiwan?

Time for Elon to add defensive capabilities to starlink?

Imminent space war?

The west needs to be able to protect our space infrastructure seen as the modern world is so reliant on it,and seen as China seem to be on the path to weaponising space regardless of them saying no one else should do the same..

Well they didn't do anything 'wrong' necessarily. Are we just jealous? Why didn't we develop this technology? Oh, could it be Obama castrated NASA years ago when his top priority for NASA was:

“find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science, math and engineering.”

He wanted to support private space companies and abandon an over-budget NASA moon project instead of re-focus their abilities to new space technology.

practice run just wait, they'll want a spot in a geosynchronous orbit (GSO) and move somebody else's and park one of theirs there.
you know like how they go build a island in some country's water and say they have the right.

Except we did. Northrop has a satellite capable of attaching to other satellites, and “refueling” them. It can stay attached and give the satellite up to another five years of usefulness. Then it can maneuver it up to a parking orbit where it can be stored.

Just Americans being upset that their government wastes money and attention on bullcrap instead of things that actually matter.

Like clearing out potentially hazardous space debris.

The US government could have done it, but they didn't.

You really think this is about cleaning up space junk? It’s an ASAT system.
