SAVVY Gorilla - SN2022

SAVVY the gorilla, from his zoo enclosure, kept looking to the sky, swatting the air.

Jimmy, his keeper noticed this odd behaviour, and that he wouldn’t eat peanuts given him; instead, hoard them as ammunition to throw back at the gawkers.

In sign language, Jimmy asked SAVVY, “What’s wrong?”

SAVVY frowning, pointed to the sky, interlocked his fingers and then shook his head violently.

Jimmy, bewildered, “SAVVY, I don’t understand.”

Amazingly, SAVVY started speaking, “Those crazy aliens want to edit my DNA and turn me bloody human! Well, you can all just piss off!”

SAVVY scuttled away, never to return…

Thanks very much, zosimov! I've appreciated your continued feedback during this contest, and I've enjoyed reading and interacting with your contributions.

I got the same feeling when revising it.

I wrote it with the intention of empathising with animals in captivity, but it evolved with the alien and biological engineering angle.

Yep, I was afraid to at the beginning. But not seeing in the OP an explicit restriction, I tried in a few of my recent stories.

I'd love to see you add some artwork to yours. Perhaps, you can just post them in each thread anyway. Smoke 'em if you've got' em!

Wonderful Story ! Always found it quite un-nerving seeing Gorillas in the zoo, more than any of the other animals they seem to understand what’s up and that they aren’t free.

Yes, I wish more people had used some pictures or artwork... just like a book cover, it gives a visual perspective to the story.

Absolutely! I grew up in both the USA and UK, but England was my last port of call. I guess their expressions just stuck more in my mind.

Yes, I don't ever recall seeing a happy gorilla in any zoo. Their eyes are so contemplative and emotive, and all I see is sadness.
