Her solitary aerobics made nary a ripple in the sun warmed pool, her consciousness lulled to near sleep from the afternnons exertion
when her reverie was broken by a sudden splash. She turned to see water drops falling back into the pool amid a sizzling mist.

"A fish? Certainly not, not in a pool.'''
'' Maybe Cthulhu'' she giggled, '' up from he depths to chew her toes.''
Then she noticed a yellow tube the size of her thumb floating to the surface where it waved the purple flag of inter galactic distress, the saucer laying still beneath six feet of chlorinated water.

The End

This opened my eyes! It puts a different perspective on aliens. Why do we think of them as our size or huge? Perhaps they are minuscule... the best way to limit resources.

I was at the pool yesterday and wondering if I had enough spark to write another shorty. I noticed how calm the water was except for old John on the far side of the pool doing his daily water walking. I often marvel at how calm the water is when it's only a couple of us in the pool and then I thought about using the pool as the setting for a shortie. Then I remembered several of the old Twilight Zones that entertained that notion of that supposition of aliens being our size. And there it was, a saucer splashing down and sinking.

I tried to keep the conclusion as far away from ones mind until the very last, even threw in that HP Lovecraft red herring to do it.

My favorite part was the gigantic idea of a saucer visiting Earth coupled with the mundane picture of '' six feet of chlorinated water. I was so happy to find that I had enough words left to add '' chlorinated''. How fun.

Yes, like you, I'm getting ideas from the most ordinary sources and flipping it to something more profound.

Actually, come to think of it, your story reminded me of the great movie "Batteries Not Included".

Oh yes, wasn't that with Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy?

Most definitely a movie of hope.
