Our neighbor put in patches of high quality artificial turf throughout his front yard accompanied by a drought tolerant landscape, and it really does look Great ! I’m a plant person , but this works and looks/feels very natural !

So what kind of maintenance does artificial turf need? Maybe just vacuumed it occasionally? At least there are no 2 stroke powered vacuums (that I know of).

Where I live artificial turf has actually caused a whole bunch of problems. First of all no plants or insects can live in it, and secondly when it does rain the water washes right off of it and causes flash flooding.

Hmmmm, well the artificial turf I’m talking about does drain and you can cut holes in it to plant shrubs or trees within it. What kind of area could artificial turf cause flash flooding ?!

What a load...
Artificial turf does indeed allow water to drain straight through it.
And causes flash flooding???
Lol... right.

There are many types of artificial grass.

And just like that, you turn a perfectly civil thread into a shade throwing competition.

The answer is quite simple. We tend to move around less than you do (about 75% less before retirement), so we place a higher value on having more permanent solutions.

In order to make the artificial lawn last longer people put down a waterproof membrane and then put the artificial lawn over the top. This stops plants from taking seed underneath it and pushing up through it. It also helps to prevent ants from nesting underneath it.

It also means that water runs off of the top rather than soaks away. If several homes in one street do this it overwhelms the drains (Our storm water drainage infrastructure tends to be much worse than yours), and causes flash flooding.

We tend to put down a water proof membrane underneath to stop weeds from growing up through the lawn, and to discourage ants from nesting under it.

Ahh, didn’t consider the membrane underneath, our neighbor used sand. I’m certainly not an artificial turf expert, just seemed to be one solution to consider. I also just recently was reading about a non-toxic green colored grass spray, lol, I know it sounds crazy , right ?! It got really good reviews too !

I live in an area with no regulations governing lawns or lawn coverage. We dug up half of our lawn and put in beds. Much lest thirsty and much less noticeable when water is at a premium.

If you move to the desert you should not expect to have the lush lawn. When you have this lush lawn in the desert you are living in a false reality at the expense of someone else's drinking water.

LAWNS are over rated.

I mow all mine more than I use them. I Don't however have to water them.

If you have to water then it must be obvious to you it shouldn't be there. Some lawns are just giant house plants.

If it can't survive on its own outside then grow something that can.

That spray is the bomb!
I've used it on these stupid boxwoods that like to burn during winter (on some branches) . That spray lasts a long time.

People just need to build yard sized buried beds with a water proof/ resistant membrane lining them. Then place your dirt and plant your grass lawn on top, keep the grass hydrated.

Bullcrap.
Artificial grass lets water drain and never causes flash flooding.

They are coming for your Lawns

Operative word there YOUR lawn.

You pay the mortgage.

You pay the property taxes.

Some A hole trying to tell you what you can do with your own property can get spent.

Especially someone proselytizing from the church of climatology.

I can tell you for a FACT.

The biggest problem is American road ways/interstates that have drastically altered the landscape.

Drainage from thousands of vehicles every day for decades.

I've seen it everytime I take I-65 Southbound.farmland that's always eternally wet

Your effing lawn.

Turf helps cool off surrounding areas through the evapotranspiration process. Lawn areas cool the air as water evaporates from the blades of grass. As much as 50% of the Sun's heat falling on the turf will be absorbed and eliminated through transpiration.

Natures AC.

Now add thousands/millions of acres of pavement & buildings acting like heat magnets.

Bah.

It does here because people usually put waterproof membranes underneath it, and even when they don't the artificial lawn causes the ground underneath to become compacted which means that there is more runoff.

Why do you feel the need to turn everything into some kind of confrontation, can't you just politely disagree?

Why does even something so simply cause you to fly into a rage?

It's people like you who act like they're the authorities on every subject.
I proved you wrong but you can't admit it so you continue to spew garbage just like you do in every thread.
You have a superiority complex and can't stand to be proven wrong.
Go back to shilling for big pharma.

I am lucky with the water thing where i live in the Uk , NATURE DUMPS 6-8 FOOT OF RAIN ON US IN A GOOD YEAR .
.

What i wish we had like America is those zoning laws you talk about where they fine you for not cutting your lawms etc as everything grows like mad with this rain , i cut my hedge last week and in that time there are shoots that have grown 10 plus inches in a week the grass is the same .

it really pisses me off to see nice gardens then a neighbour that lives in a jungle next door but the biggest culprit in my area is the local council who are paid to look after the footpaths and parks and old pensioners gardens and grit the roads and paths in winter , everything went out to private contracts the ball didn't just get dropped it got kicked well up the park
and nothing gets done .

With all the water we flush away from our homes 80 % of it is fit to water the garden and vegetable plots , i have a water butt out my back fed from the waste rain water all it takes is a entry into the plastic collector pipes the same can be done easily to the waste water coming from a house ! .

Up there for thinking , down there for dancing Jag

You’re complaining about the your lawn?

Now imagine if they wanted you to give birth, have unprotected sex, and told you who could you marry? But you’re a tender heart and sensitive. I get it.
