Some do, some don't. Many kids at 18 need the structure and maturity that military service can provide.

i will never forget our first day at the rifle range, the PMI said you would be amazed at the devastation a 18, 19, 20 year old can cause with a M16. now mind you this was way before going postal became a thing.

part of the reason they want young people, is a relatively fresh clean mind that can be molded to their needs that's not clouded with a bunch years of being a individual. don't get me wrong if it wasn't for the Corps, i would have wound up in prison or dead, cause i was 10 feet tall and bullet proof, would get in sh@@ in a heart beat, had a hard head, and was gonna do what i wanted no matter what. the Corps changed that, well somewhat.
