Joey Vittorio was cold and scared.

Hill across the valley, crawling with ChiComs.

He wanted to go home.

Clasping his hands together, he prayed, and prayed.

A choked cry. "Mama"

Suddenly, a tall figure by his foxhole.

"Vittorio. You're relieved. Go to the aid station."

A truck there with, strangely, an old, bearded driver who seemed illuminated from behind. "Welcome home, son."

...

Come sunrise, the platoon sergeant informed "LT":

"We lost Vittorio, Sir; frozen solid." He paused.

LT noticed, "And?"

"His hands... were clasped in prayer."

You're on a roll, F2d5thCavv2!

Cruel irony. I think I can guess what happened, but this story needs expanding.

Have you heard about the Italian idea of "vittoria mutilata", mutilated victory? Italians after the first world war I guess felt slighted, because Italy did not receive all of the areas promised.

The name Vittorio made me think of it, I know it's probably not related though. I mean it's an ancient Italian name.
