"Mariupol is a city in the Donetsk region and is now being returned to the Donetsk People's Republic"

No.

Mariupol is Ukrainian territory.

So are dombas and Crimea.

Don't think life's that simple.

Agree with me that it is rather unusual for a state to shell its territory with heavy guns for many years.

Something can only be born in one place.

Or do you deny that Germany is part of the West?

Not unusual when it's occupied by invaders attempting to steal that land.

What's unusual is invading a non threatening country in an effort to steal land.

It's russia that is 'unusual'.

Imagine for a moment that Russia occupied the DNR and LNR.

Nevertheless, it is not clear to me why to shoot at residential buildings in which the "occupied" citizens of Ukraine continue to live.

Is this an action to intimidate the occupiers by killing their own citizens?

It is still possible to rescue Ukrainian fighters trapped in Mariupol, but Kiev will need foreign help to do so, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday. Meanwhile, Russia declared the city to be completely cleared of troops loyal to Kiev, with only a few die-hards left at the Azovstal factory complex.

“There is a military way” to unblock Mariupol, Zelensky told local media during a press conference with the prime ministers of Spain and Denmark in Kiev.

“We need to prepare for it. We are preparing to be strong, but here we need the help of our partners. It’s difficult, by ourselves,” he added.

I cannot believe Z still thinks he can liberate Mariupol......

That was russia shooting at residential buildings in Marioupol, with over 90% of them now destroyed by some reports.

Ukraine did not do that, and Marioupol is Ukrainian territory.

Russia's occupation of dombas and Crimea is a foreign invasion, there is nothing improper about fighting bask against foreign invaders trying to steal land.

Do you understand the difference between occupiers and occupied citizens?

The US uses drones to kill innocents all around the globe, while Russia is trying to minimize civilian casualties.

If you watch BBC, CNN, MSNBC they will tell that Russia is killing innocents in the thousands.

Ukraine did not do that, and Marioupol is Ukrainian territory.

By that logic again. Kosovo is therefore Serbian territory and therefore Serbia has every right to protects its minority of Serbs that are still left in Northern Kosovo.

You could be right on that, I really don't know what happened with the Kosovo mess.

Either way, dombas and Crimea are Ukrainian soil, no matter how many times russia invades and calls Ukrainian soil their own.

International agencies are saying the same thing, now with 1045 confirmed russian executions near Kiev.

Do you understand the similarities between occupier and collaborators being used as human shields?

It was russian troops keeping Ukrainian troops out of the Ukrainian dombas and Crimea territory, along with their collaborators, not ordinary Ukrainian citizens.

But why do you think Russia destroyed over 90% of residential buildings?

A. - Russia is trying to destroy Ukraine and kill all civilians?
B. - Ukraine sets up snipers and firing positions in these residential buildings forcing Russia to engage?

Or do you have a different option?

I might suspect snipers, except russia is also dropping large unguided gravity bombs, those aren't intended to take out snipers, they take out entire city blocks full of humans.

Same for sending cruise missiles at hospitals where there was zero military activity.

Because its easier to kill non Russians hidden by war instead of lining up non russians and executing them after the war..

None are as badly destroyed as Marioupol, but russian soldiers behaved similarly in many small towns around Kiev, Kharkiv, Sumy & Mykoliav. Damage inside the major cities themselves is different in each area, mostly depending on how far the russians got before being forced to retreat.
