Yall think the cops are bad in the USA?
This is a complicated topic, it's not black-and-white.
There are lots of 'bad cops' in the world, so also in USA. American cops DO seem more aggressive, violent, unnecessarily so when you watch shows like
COPS, or those youtube videos where a cop is actually shown to murder someone they have never met before, or even seen the face of. To me, this is
horrifying. (The video I saw was a cop chasing another car and the cop starting to shoot that car while still driving - destroying his own police
car's windshield in the process.. it's pretty intense)
American cops do seem to scream angrily a lot - they use angry, fear tactics and other pretty unfair stuff, and even when someone CLEARLY isn't any
kind of danger, they scream angrily anyway and make them lay on the ground/floor and handcuff them tightly (and possibly painfully), and only THEN
they might have some kind of more 'rational talk' with them. It's pretty crazy.
There's also the aspect of 'peace officers vs. policy enforcers'. A peace officer is a more friendly fellow, keeping the peace and helping the
community, and so on. It's the 'dream cop' we all want in our village, everyone knows the cop and the cop knows everyone.
Then there's the 'policy enforcer' type, whose job is not to keep the peace, or even arrest criminals per se, but his job is to acquire funds - or in
other words, GET MONEY from you. This means, he will slap fines on you for the tiniest 'crimes', that are not really crimes at all. He will get on
your case like a pitbull on a poodle for basically anything, and if you are not violating the law or breaching the peace, he will come up with
SOMETHING.
There are not a lot of peace officers anymore, at least in the USA, for all I know. However, my knowledge of this topic is a bit rusty and probably
obsolete, so don't take my word for it, research it for yourself.
In any case, then there are the 'psycho cops' that OF COURSE go unchecked, because police protect each other - we all know this type that will beat
you to a pulp before determining if you even did anything unlawful, just because he/she can, and thus 'bad, evil cops', then there is corruption, as
police salary is probably not very high, but criminals live like rich people.
There was a good Miami Vice episode about an undercover cop that got so used to the 'rich life', he couldn't go back to the 'domestic bliss with a
bitter, fat, ugly wife' and so on. Ed O'Neill starring kinda made it a bit funnier than it should've been - can't really be helped, but the point was
that when you are put into a position of LOTS OF POWER AND GUNS AND EVERYONE FEARING YOU and at the same time, you are not paid very well, but you
have opportunities to get lots of money if you 'bend the rules a little' or 'look the other way' somewhat, and there's really no one making sure you
do the right thing, there's not a lot of accountability, and even in those rare cases you can usually weasel out of everything or the system will make
sure you won't be punished..
..the temptation is understandably ridiculously strong.
Having said all that, I know from experience and for a fact, that there _ARE_ good peace officers and other relatively good cops, who are only trying
to do a very difficult job, and it can be quite thankless at times (although they do get perks, like people's admiration and fear, generally speaking,
and free doughnuts (I refuse to call them donuts, just like I refuse to say 'drivethru' instead of 'drive through', but I am probably a relic).
As I said, it's a complicated topic that's hard to do justice in a post, but I hope I scratched the surface. There are good and bad cops, but in a
corrupt system, how could it be otherwise? Cops are not supposed to serve the legal system, they're supposed to serve the LAW.
