is as advertised

no escape for that wreckage and they seem to be getting the hang of leading the aircraft with the MANPADS

You don't lead with a heat seeker. On the MI-24 the engine exhaust is on either side in front of the rotor. That's where the missile guided to. I have to question if that was a Stinger? They usually don't leave that much of a smoke trail. In fact I have to question the validity of the entire video.

I've fired both the Redeye and the Stinger in training.

doesn't look like a stringer.
The MI-24 was flying to low to the ground. Looks like it.

On first view, it looked rather CGI/manufactured. The way the camera angle panned right, precisely with no flutter/zoom , nobody is that smooth with taking footage, unless the claim is it's a fancy surveillance camera or something.

I watched it again on YT, full resolution, and it looks a bit more realistic, but it would not shock me if this is next-gen deep fake footage. Something seems off with the movement and light/tone.

locking on the heat signature you don't need a lead but helo are hard to get that signature on so you can lead them a bit and by the time the missile get up there it will lock to the exhaust.

or at least that would make sense to me.

a jet seems like it would be easier to get a lock on the ground with as its exhaust isn't in a down wash

than again the afghans had good luck with stingers on these exact hellos

if it was part of a mobil air defense unit like a Tor or something like that, where they have a few A2A missiles and a large caliber highspeed gun.

this could be from the EO system of whatever launched that missile that's i know they have remote antitank weapons that you can set up remotely and observe from a distance but i don't think that's what was going on here. you can see the camera move when the shot is fired

could also be from a drone

here is a story of civilians using their drones to help find Russian forces

Fair enough. If this is footage from a launch vehicle/installation, presumably run by the Ukrainians, it makes me wonder why the footage is being circulated in the public. For propaganda purposes, obviously, but ... is this equipment mobile? Better hope so, and better hope they moved it already, because the video is a good way to get a fix on where this installation is.

Hang on a minute. If that's a video of a Russian convoy in Ukraine, why are they bypassing all those towns and villages? The Ukranians are saying the Russian are murdering all the civilians. Why aint they attacking those towns and villages?

They can't attack all of them at once so focusing on larger interior cities, plus smaller border towns down to pop 3000.

Your point?

I was in a helo squadron. In practice I never had a problem with getting a tone on a helo. With a Tomcat you usually had to wait until it passed you before you got the tone. That's why the missile is designed for a stern chase.

That smoke trail makes the launcher dead meat if there's another aircraft around. That was my reason for questioning it. It is possible that the missile's motor could be near the end of it's shelf life. The other thing is that the aircraft appears to accelerate after getting hit. That could be a matter of perspective since the launcher appears to be on a hill almost even with the aircraft.

It's not a convoy. It's a lone helicopter.

Someone in the YouTube comments claimed that the depicted copter is actually KA-52 not an MI-24..

I opened the video in YouTube full screen. I was able to stop the video right before the missile hit. It is a Mi-24. It would not allow me to make a screen capture.

Yeah way to smooth to be a human all jacked up on adrenaline to be behind that camera.

In my experience the shakes happen after the event. The few times I was in a situation everything seemed to slow down and training took over. Afterwards I could barely drink a cup of water with out sloshing it out of the cup.

very interesting.

i would assume the seekers have been upgraded

also do you need a lock on before firing the stinger or can you use fire it in the general location to where you want it and it will find the heat source and guide it's self?
