You can't be serious? I've only witnessed willful ignorance being presented as a good thing in one place. An evangelical church I'll never step foot in again. Literally raising children to work in his businesses and of course he's also a preacher. Education has changed the world, ignorance from lack of education or poor schools (today) is what holds us all back.

The more free time teens get in their time in a nation that push for entitlements like it was a right, the more time to get in trouble been stupid.

In our nation is not support for teens anymore and nothing for them to do in their free time most of the time.

I agree, it should be a 7 day school week.

This is about teachers being lazy bastards and only lazy basttards.

Prep time ? A whole day ? every week ? For grade school ? Even for high school - BULLSHYTE !!!!!!

I got into a debate with a school principal because I picked up my grandkid at 4:10 pm twice. Principal was complaining that her staff end their day at 4pm and blablabla.

Well - cry me a #ing River for those LAZY bastards that get TWO MONTHS OFF EVERY YEAR

And now they want a 4 day workweek ????

I believe in self-determination, taking responsibility for yourself, etc. And so, yeah, I don't think children working is a bad thing, especially if we want to raise people who understand that they need to work for what they want in life. I mean, if a kid wants to work at someone elses' lemonade stand then I think that should be their right as long as they do not put themselves in danger, and as long as they aren't held to work by contractual obligation nor compulsion; and the same goes for schooling as well: if they want schooling then let them have it at their expense or their parents' expense and if not then let them not.

More, I think if a school teacher deserves to be paid, and they do, then offering unpaid or low wage internships to children should be fine as well (assuming no compulsion or danger is involved).

edit: I don't understand you people who think it's okay to compel others. If a teacher wants to work only 1 hour a week then that should be their right (assuming their is no contract/you haven't paid for anything else). And if anyone else is not under contract to you and/or you haven't paid for it then, imo, you can go f right off with your demands - no one owes you anything at that point.

talking about 100% crap, it certainly has yourself covered in it.

teachers are no more lazy than everyone else. "Prep time ? A whole day ? every week ? For grade school ? Even for high school". well yes, of course a full day. while it isn't enough, it would still certainly help. personally i would prefer to see teachers paid overtime, for ALL the work that they do outside school hours. considering "teaching", or actually things like marking assignments/projects/tests/exams, working on lesson plans, writing tests and exams as well as coming up with and setting up assignments and projects for the students to do. takes up a rather large chunk of a teacher's evenings and weekends,on top of the time they actually have kids in class.

and yes they do get two UNPAID months of vacation in the summer, as well as the UNPAID holidays during the school year.. and of course in most places teachers can not collect unemployment for all that unpaid time off. which leaves many teachers competing for those few summer school teaching jobs, and other work during those unpaid vacations,so that they earn some pay.

sounds like the debates i used to have with people having their cars locked up IN the shop overnight, because they came to get their car after everything was already closed and locked up for the night. and dam right you should be yelled at for not picking up your kid on time. i have to wonder how well you would take having to stay at work late, with NO PAY for doing so, because a customer or client has decided not to show upon time. perhaps you would prefer that the school just hand your kids off to child protective services, and then fight with them over things like child abandonment charges for your laziness in not picking the kids up on time.

1. In Canada, teachers ARE paid for their two months off in the summer

2. I have lost count over my career how many times I have worked on-call and/or up to midnight or even later in support of resolution of a technical problem, UNPAID time. And NO BITCHING from me ! Ever !

It's callled being a profesionnal.

You clearly would never be able to understand.

I did an internship the last year of high school, and it was great. My internship was on a navy research base, and i left it with a top secret clearance that followed me till i retired.

Anytime I worked on a military base and needed a clearance, I had mine and it meant better pay..

1) in Canada teachers ARE NOT paid for their two months off in the summer. it may appear that they do, but that money they do get, is money deducted out of their pay the rest of the year, so they might at least have some pay come in while off work for the summer.

2) you say you have lost track of how many times you have worked late without appropriate pay. even working till midnight. so it would seem that unlike a teacher, you only ever have to do so every once in a blue moon. not pretty much every weeknight and a good chunk of weekends the entire school year. has nothing to do with being a "professional", in fact in many jobs, including my last job, working "off the clock", ie working without being paid for your time, is a firing offense.

Periodically, the school gives tasks that are not so easy to solve and it is impossible to do it quickly enough. For example, I sometimes went to writingbros.com... to find ideas and inspiration for my works and essays. It made me stronger, because I still solved these problems.

I absolutely agree with you. Very deep thoughts that respond within me.

A four day work week would be better.

Even required if they decided to implement a four day school week.

Might even address a small portion of the unemployment statistic's considering people would be required to pick up the slack.

End of the day people work far to much and far to hard some for what amounts to a pittance.

Existence is about more than just hard graft.

JAG,

Serious question. Is it even education they're getting, or just indoctrination with an occasional useful bit thrown in?

Even when I went to high school (yeah, dinosaur times), it was obvious that most of what we were expected to learn would not be particularly useful in life.

With that in mind, my guess is that it won't matter if it is four days or five. The fifth day could be used to have the students spend time in actual working environments to gain a better appreciation of adult life, but that would require a lot of community support.

ETA. We had internships back then, but the jobs were better than gas stations etc.

Cheers

The world spins that fast these days that the skills and knowledge imparted to our children whilst at school might be next to near useless comparatively speaking when they enter the real world.

Education is always better than the alternative all the same simply down to the fact that stupid people are easier to control and lead down the garden path.

Teach them how to think for themselves and they have a better chance in life by my estimation, and to do that they require an education.

As to indoctrination well i would argue that's what organised religious practice is for in all its many varied guise.

I'd suggest its more a question of the quality of schooling rather than the quantity of schooling.

Personally I'd favour a radical overhaul of the approach to schooling and education but I'm aware that would be a massive financial commitment and may require something of a step change in priorities.

If it involves a longer school day for 4 days, then obviously no that's stupid. Their attention span doesn't last a normal school day. Even grown adults can't pay attention that long.
