The backyard you refer to is not their backyard anymore. They are the front yards of sovereign nations.

NONE of which has expressed a desire to be a part of Russia and none have expressed the intention of trying to invade Russia.

No good can come of it and you know it.

By the same token, if America stopped installing puppet regimes, some real home rule might organically grow. Democracy is inherently socialist up to a point. All American foreign policy does is give the illusion of it, and hand out free tickets to Disneyland.

Russia media says "We're evacuating".
Then says, "Not Really"

Two weeks later, the same thing.

Here's January 2022: www.reuters.com...

They're playing checkers with the Biden Administration micromanagers 🔥😃

That's what I figured. It was surprising to see 3 different times where U.S. media reported the Russians were evacuating.

They should be down to -750 embassy personnel now, lol.

Putin can't seem to live in the present. He is stuck in the 1980's and the cold war mentality. He demands countries treat Russia as if it were still the USSR and it pisses Putin off when countries dont.

Putin has been going on and on about reforming the USSR and his statements against Ukraine back up his temper tantrums. To add insult to injury Putin's claim that Russians have every right to secede from the current country they are in in order to join Russia is the same BS that Nazi Germany used.

Putin like to brag that no country has ever succeeded in invading Russia. Putin is absolutely wrong with that statement and if he knew history he would know this.

Invading Russia is not the goal of the west and it would be dumb fro the west to even try. On the flip side Putin could invade his neighbors who are members of NATO but I dont think Russia would survive that stupidity (as Putin himself has acknowledged multiple times now over the years).

I think the longer Putin is in office the greater chances of a full scale war breaking out.

All the more reason for Putin to live in the present.

Also by the same token calling a country who once was occupied by the USSR and has no intentions of repeating that doesnt make them a puppet regime. However if you wish to go down that road remember that Russia has invaded Georgia and currently occupies 2 of there provinces. The same can be say for Ukraine as well as the province Russia controls in Moldova. Or the fact Putin deployed Russian forces in Kazakhstan in the last month or 2.

Sounds like puppet regimes to me, using your mentality.

Precisely.

Putin wants to wind the clock backwards.

That never works, but usually a lot of people die in the attempt.

A huge tragedy is approaching. The current situation has the feel of the 1930s.

Cheers

Should Ukraine be denied their autonomy to choose who they ally with because of something that occurred 30 years ago?

Well, i agree with you and disagree with you at the same time.

There was never a "formal" agreement with the soviet bloc that NATO would not move eastward, it was more back-channel and memos per the national archives. Politicians lie....new concept. But should some reassurances be made to Russia that (as per the memos) there was never INTENT to move "one inch eastward", that a sovereign nation should and does have the autonomy to decide for themselves, but the intent hasn't changed? My instinct tells me yes, some reassurances should be made.

Now directly reacting to what i've quoted from you up there..... i mean, i dunno, should we in the USA expect to have Constitutional rights simply because of something that occurred over 200 years ago?

Russia sees itself as the main force preventing a one world government. They won't back down. Ukraine's government is being pressed by internal neo-Nazi militias to fight Russia or risk fighting them. I'd bet we'll see Ukraine go up and very soon after China move move on Taiwan. The world watched our failure in Afghanistan and has concluded we have lost the ability to fight a two front war. Add Iran taking advantage of the distraction to take on Israel and/or Saudi Arabia and Erdogen who can be reliably counted on to do the wrong thing, and it starts to look like it could be a hot summer.

sounds like negotiation stuff

maybe Putin has figured out how much he can get and is winding things down.

he'll get conce$$ions and Biden &co will walk away boasting that they prevented a war.

Nobody should ever rely on a verbal agreement about anything in international security affairs. Russia should have gotten that on paper and now shouldn’t complain about it.

I supported Putin in Syria, but this is putting himself in history as a butcher boy. The US on the Cuba crisis 60 years ago at least were threatened with Russian nuclear missiles in Cuba, Putin here has nothing similar. I know it's about his sphere of influence he’s protecting but unfortunately, that doesn’t take into consideration the people of Ukraine’s aspirations. And even though he’s got a legitimate beef about NATO, on this Putin is WRONG. Mainly because unlike in Cuba he is NOT being threatened by anything going on in Ukraine which justifies the massive death and destruction this war will heap upon the Ukraine people and what will eventually affect the Russian people also.

Some potentially good news in stopping this stupid war.

Ukraine Live Updates: Kremlin Says Talks Are ‘Far From Exhausted,’ as Russian Buildup Continues
Ukraine’s president hinted at a major concession and Russia’s foreign minister said talks would continue, suggesting room for diplomatic resolution amid warnings that war could be imminent.www.nytimes.com...

I know the pressure on Zelensky is building up. He actually said out loud the Russians are coming Wednesday to attack!
he later backtracked a bit on that.

It never made sense for Ukraine to join NATO for the sake of world peace. Ukraine of course doesn't want to be a Russian puppet but come on man, joining NATO is very problematic.

If he concedes not to join NATO maybe war can be averted. On the other hand, he has political pressure I'm sure to join NATO by maybe right-wing radicals and other even moderate forces in his country. But the threat of war is upon him so maybe the above story of him conceding not to join NATO is significant.

And it still doesn't. Ukraine never wanted to join NATO for "world peace", they wanted to be a NATO member state for Ukranian security.
