Alternate possibilities are interesting and fun but usually short-lived. We're talking about taking the iconic main and outright changing them for
good as the intent.
It smacks of thinking they cannot create what they want as an original property, so the co-op a pre-existing and successful character to morph into
what they want to see and doom it in the process because people just aren't into the Social Justice Warriors. It might be an interesting what-if
diversion, but as gay Superman shows, it's not how people want to iconic main characters to be.
Superman doesn't fight for "Truth, Justice, and a Better Tomorrow" and he's not gay. That's not who people want him to be. You might find a market for
a character who does those things, but it's not Superman's market. You need to create that character and he's not Superman.
Similarly, Frank Castle is the Punisher and he has his backstory and his fans expect him to be what he is. You might find a market for a character who
grew up in the inner city and came out of a single mother, impoverished, gang ridden background who went on to get into some serious vigilantism, but
he's not Frank Castle or the Punisher. He's someone else, and he deserves his own story and identity. Give him those things and you might find your
own success and market with him.
Actually, that second dude sounds way more intriguing as a possible character than gay superdude.
