After being on vacation for a month and a half, this morning was my first day back to work.
I woke up at 3:30 am to start my vehicle to warm it up for my 2 hour drive up to the mine site.
I stepped outside and it felt like a punch to the throat. Shes a brisk -40 c outside right now.

I made the 2 hour drive north and by the time I pulled into the mine site, my vehicle was reading -48 c !!!
When I got out of my vehicle, it hurt to breath outside.
I made the 200 meter walk to the security check point, snot running down my face, eye lids frosted and huffing and puffing - its hard to breath in this weather. I got inside security and wouldnt you know it... I left my personnel RFID on the dash of my vehicle.
Trekked back to my SUV, got the stupid F.O.B and headed back to security.

Got to my office after packing a lunch in the cafe, and wouldn't ya know it, I have just about 900 emails waiting for me.

I refused to set up my work email so I can check it when at home. I told everyone I was taking 6 weeks off and to call my house if they needed.
Now I have to sift threw all this garbage.

Thankfully, my cross shift got things lined up in the field for the work crews, so I don't need to be out there checking on them right away this morning. Plus its absolutely stupid outside, so any excuse to stay in the office, ill take today haha.

All in all it feels good to be back. Vacation time sounds nice, but when I already work 1 week on, 1 week off, its like I get a vacation every week.

I hope you all had a great start to the new year.
Its time for me to get back to the grind... for a week anyway.

How many others refuse to check work emails when at home?

I tell myself I'm not going to do it but I end up doing it anyway. I may not reply to all of them but categorize the ones I'm not replying to by priority for when I do get back.

Best advice: CTRL+A followed by SHIFT+Delete

If it was really important ... they'll send it again.

I can't believe it's only 900 after six weeks. You're lucky!!

You're a better man than me. It's 0 where I'm at and I'm not going outside unless the house catches on fire.
I'm gonna stand close so I can at least stay warm.

Do they call you instead?

I had the privilege of saying, I don't have a cell, so try my house line. Then when I saw my works numbers show up id let the voice mail take it.
That worked for the past 11 years.
But I got a cell phone last week.
Ill see how long I can keep it a secret for lol

Rarely.

It's usually an email or Teams text.

Ahh teams.

I was asked to download that about 6 months ago. just before I went on vacation I decided to log in.
Turns out... I was missing a lot of information when it came to some of the projects I was working on hahah.

I have to admit, teams is pretty useful for project work.

This company I contacted last year for a quote on a specific drone just wont stop hounding me.

The thing cost $300,000. USD. Which seems like a lot, but when it comes to the mining industry, its like 30 minutes worth of crushed ore.
I told him I was buying the drone, but I was going to be offsite for 6 weeks and that I would get back to him in Feb.
So far ive come across 3 emails from him "just checking in"
lol im not even going to reply to them, until mid feb now.
String the bastard a long a bit.

I have always refused to check emails at home, even when in charge.
About to start a new job, so not sure if it will be an issue there.

But yeah, the clean up is always a mess, after being gone.

Stay warm!!!

Checking work emails at home is not a real vacation. I let my work phone die from no charging when I am on vacation, it stops the temptation to look at the phone when it beeps that a email just came in. I turn it over and out of the way the moment I start my vacation. And when I leave town it doesn't come with me. I have two phones work and personal good to keep it separate.

Thank God I've only had to deal with -30 so far this year.

That extra -10 is like a kick to the nuts.

Going to stoke the fire now, lol.

My favorite part of it being that cold, -40°, is that it doesn't matter if you're using F or C. I always had fun doing the boiling water to snow trick to convince the kids I had Ice Man's or Elsa's powers.

Where are you for temps that cold? Nunavut?

I would kiss a male cousin right now, just for that temperature to increase 10 degrees to hit -30 c.

Sitting beside the woodstove sounds soooooo damn good right now.

Yeah the boiling pot of water is a pretty cool trick. Absolutely mystifying trick to the kids.

And no, not Nunavut - However, I spent a few years working up there for an exploration company, about 15 years back.

Im in Northern Ontario.

Don't wander into the woods and get lost, the Yellowjackets might eat you.

Im more worried about the wolves. I dont need to step into the wilderness for them.
Theyre right on our mine site.

Last winter I raced a wolf. There was 2 of them lurking about, but only 1 tested his speed against me.
