The story of Rocky Erickson and his music are interesting to say the least. The 13th floor elevators, and his other projects are pretty entertaining.
He was diagnosed, institutionalized, and medicated. Schizophrenia, although later on his caretakers decided that mental illness wasn't real and medication was a mistake. And that prayer is the only answer.

And that he was recovered.

Ive recently heard a lot of people especially here on this site say that mental illness is a subjective assessment of a problem.

James Taylors 'Fire and Rain' comes to mind, especially the last verse which is about his 5 month stay in an institution.

Back to Rocky. Believed in aliens, conspiracies, evil government..All of it…These were all 'symptoms' to the people around him. Easy to blame drugs..If someone gets hurt in a car accident, is it the roads fault? Or is it their problem because they knew the risks associated with driving?

"Wish You Were Here" was about Syd Barrett, as was "Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Barrett was a founding member of Pink Floyd.

Might it be more about Aleister Crowley's "beast", if its knives though why "steely"?

OP mentioned stealing so that made me wonder about the album cover.

Syringe needles is what I imagined. The beast being the addiction, maybe?

good movie and book is brain on fire. True story of how someone whith a autoimmune disease attacking the brain was misdiagnosed as mental illness. Also talks about how so many people may have this condition and be misdiagnosed. I am also reading a book right now called Demonic foes : my twenty-five years as a psychiatrist investigating possessions, diabolic attacks, and the paranormal, this also talks about demonic posession being misdiagnosed as mental illness. Although it is rare and you need to have an open mind, some people are posessed and a good excorsism can cure them.a reply to: didntasktobeborned

The song about Steely Dan "do it again" was about the accusation of stolen water and the "wheel" defense that this was more like a piece of playground equipment.

It was a bit of homage to Steely Dan.

I have noticed an uptick in delusion in people around here over the last year and a half or so. It accelerated quite a bit if they were watching the news too much. I try to watch the news everyday but am aware of how much they deceive people into believing that things are worse than they really are. But the problem with that is that you can start thinking it is all BS, even the truth they tell. The media, some high ranking politicians, and health agencies cry wolf all the time which is not good for society. In fact those groups are probably making mental illness more rampant these days, so many people are being constantly hammered with doom porn that they can crack

I know not many want to hear it, but if you are Christian you are supposedly a believer in the bible.
Look at the many cases in the bible of people inhabited by demons and what it was like the various symptoms.
Today we dismiss this as a delusion and so no one gets help in that case, or they are given meds that change behavior but don't really help the real problem.

A couple of folks are right about it being a reference to Stealy Dan, but it not for the reasons they are saying.
Both bands were manged by the same man, and they had a competition going, and took shots at one another. One of Stealy Dan's songs, not one of their better ones, has a line Turn up the Eagles the neighbors are listening.

Frey said the song was them trying to make something weird and it was inspired by a book.

Henly has said Hotel California was about a couple things in interviews, he has been fairly consistent saying that it's was more about the life of being a successful group and the dark side that comes with it, and that it also shows the same about the greed and lifestyle of the American Dream, and that they tried to have some song on all their albums that showed that about the music industry.

Im glad you said it because back in the Bible days to my knowledge drugs weren't prolific. But there are indeed many instances there that describe these symptoms. And today it seems like what everyone wants to instantly blame is drugs. I realize unregulated drugs certainly exacerbate the problem, but Id say for a lot of these cases the problem was there before the drugs. And its more like the mental illness led to the drug use. Because seriously, what person in their right mind would snort drainO?

Some here say that ‘Hotel California’ is the old CA state mental hospital just north of LA that lots of stars and musicians were inpatient, back in the day. The staff and locals called it that anyway. Its the CSUCI main campus now.

The lyrics in the song "hotel California" talk about "hearing" the mission bell which with a little artistic license might be "psychosis". I'm assuming its Tiffany-twisted,with the Mercedes bends that explains about the "Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice and said "We are all just prisoners here, of our own device".
I notice a lot of musicians like diamonds. Those come in a number of different configurations for example, Shakespeare or flight.

Speaking of Shakespeare, the X-files episode I screen grabbed from mentioned signs of predation in the autopsy report of the 5 year old boy.

A short time before he died, Sir Isaac Newton was quoted as saying

I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.”
He was probably visualizing something mathematical that isn't really shareable except with people like Leonardo Davinci that watched the shells at Lombardy 100 years earlier.

Shakespeare wrote about the "prettier" aspect of the attractor.

I think he'll be to Rome As is the osprey to the fish, who takes it By sovereignty of nature.

Coriolanus was an actual Roman General.

I remember hearing about the manned moon mission and thinking that would be fun for about 10 seconds before the eagle came and gutted me with the thermodynamics and risk assessment.
