At any one time there are around 50,000 cargo ships at sea or in port.
www.quora.com...

www.visualcapitalist.com...

These ships use super dirty fuel called bunker fuel. This sludge is dirt cheap as its waste from the refining process, so they sell it to shipping companies for $500 a ton. This stuff puts out 2,000 times more sulfer than diesel.

www.wired.com...

The largest ship in the world, the Emma Maersk has a five story engine that makes over 100k horsepower......it burns 16 tons of said fuel PER HOUR or 380 tons of fuel a day. Its the equivalent of 50 million cars. There are 8 of these beasts.

newatlas.com...

If ships were a country they would be the worlds 6th largest polluter.

We get 90% of our goods from ships.

Thanks Globalization!

That is some sad news. Living next to the ocean, I get to also see the sewage from ships. Terrible on high tides.

Good thread and interesting info. Wind and sun is free. Lots of modern warships make their own ftesh water supply from the sea. It clearly is not in globalist interests to put the same philosophy into maritime power generation.

If your into shipping the 'Chief' puts out some good videos, that fuel isn't allowed in all areas of the world.

All ships that used steam turbines were using fresh water produced from condensers, these have mostly been replaced by diesel two strokes as outlined in the Original Post. They also can and do produce fresh water through condensers but those need the electricity produced from the prime mover to do so. Not sure what you're getting at with the fresh water angle, this is low tech that is easily available and is already in use.

I think even Nuke powered ships use salt water for cooling and even fire fighting.....fresh water condensers would be for the crew to drink????

Either way can you imagine the size of the sail or solar panel needed to make 100,000 horsepower? Christ you would have to build a ship the size of Hawaii.

Not in the closed water portion of the system.
