You'd be surprised what someone can do with a knife if they get close to you. I think it was "Within 12' the guy with the knife wins over the guy with the gun"
Now, of course, in these circumstances, that wouldn't be the case, but you still follow your training. They always cuff the suspect once he's "subdued" whether he is breathing or not...
