simple enough solution, is to make them so their not dependent on chips to run.

Or drop the marketing-driven engineering, and get by with fewer chips.

The iPad wannabe in the dash can go away altogether.
Go analog wherever possible, i.e. HVAC controls.

And why does every area of the vehicle need a separate control module? Integrate and simplify; they might even improve reliability while they're at it.

Exactly.
Chevy, along with the other players have absolutely destroyed the functionality of their trucks with ridiculous computer bs.
Traction control that can't be disabled, only temporarily until you hit 30 mph. Which makes the truck unable to get out of mud.
The entire stabilicrap system that tries to steer your car using the brakes...in a corner
Mass vehicle tracking spyware like onstar and similar, which saw a huge surge after the bailouts..surprise
It makes me irate to need to reverse engineer a 40k truck to be functional.
I don't want to drive my cellphone.

Why is ford continuing to waste resources in this manner, what is going on.

They have millions invested in assembly lines robotics, etc. They need to keep them running. Thats why they choose to manufacture and dress with chips later and flash the computers.

Otherwise, bankrupt.

Seems pretty wasteful to me. Also very stupid.
