In recent months the government has proposed cracking down on online anonymity. The idea is that attaching online posts to a person’s real name will reduce abuse and increase accountability.

Online bullying and misinformation are growing problems, and government action to address them is overdue.

However, limiting anonymity alone won’t make social media less toxic. It will only work combined with broader reforms to platform design and business models, which drive polarisation, negativity, abuse and misinformation.

ATS has been subject to such instances in the past. Good find!
ATS owners and staff have a pretty iron clad...

We should be fine considering moderators constantly spot nefarious content.

Now if i can just figure out how I got this Android bug😐

Just prep for the new world order.

That is why the Biden administration is talking about monitoring everyone's email and texts (to stop misinformation, is the excuse)

Here we come dragonfly - the program created by Google in the USA - given to China to keep 100% surveilance on 100% of the population of Chinese citizens social media and online presence.

If it was openly created in the USA by a USA owned company, well it most likely is coming to the USA with the support and encouragement of progressive liberals who created dragonfly and support socialism and communism, which have zero tolerance for anyone to say anything the elite political class doesn't like or doesn't want the ignorant masses to hear.

Like many others, I do not believe the removal of anonymity will stop the activity they claim they want to reduce.

The people it would affect the most, are the people who are already respectful in their online presence. They would likely just remove themselves from social media and online venues.

Those that are aggressive, antagonistic, rude, vitriolic, and wish to stir the pot, will continue as before, if not become worse.

In for a penny, in for a pound.

I have seen so much of that behavior sliding from the virtual world into the real one, that I fear it will only make it worse.

All of it is already controlled. They just want to come out of the closet. The easiest way to do that is to get the people to champion it, believing it is for the common good. Not realizing they will be cutting off their own noses. locking themselves into a false sense of security, where they have handed over their rights for just another lie and deception.

Personally I don’t care if they officially know who i am and what i think and believe. It won’t make a difference, they know already anyway.

Privacy on the internet is gone for decades already.

How about the "unofficial" stalkers that may have nefarious intent. You want that? How about your family; the far reaching implications are endless.

You’re completely free to choose whether you use a non anonymous site or not. Nobody is obliging you to use social media and stuff like that..

I agree that this obviously can be used with bad intent, though personal responsibility is a thing aswell. For this reason you should never put personal details on the web, lots of crazies out there. If your details will be public on a certain service, don’t use it if you don’t want to take the risk.

I could not register to ATS without one. The normal email registration was not open back then. And if you already have one with gmail and you delete the account, you can't login anymore to ATS. This happened to my Oleandra88 account.

So I made a fresh gmail account for ATS, but it's not possible to convert it to a normal ATS email account.

We need to be deanonymized for the incoming social-credit system, like Ducky said.

Am thinking that every word we write, every star and flag we give, every thread we click-on, is being recorded, and may be factored-into that score, coming soon to your own home.

That's probably prudent; but I doubt if any competent 16yr old hacker needs your email, phone # etc, to find out who you are. There are black mkt data bases available on the dark web you know.

Happy ThanksGiving Beth!!

I'm Tamu. It originates from Swahili and means sweet. You'll probably agree that it's a misnomer for me. Most people just call me Tam (pronounced Tom). My grandparents had adopted a couple of African children, my uncles, and I was named after one of them.

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

Since that article is about Australia and ATS is based in the US, it really has nothing to do with ATS.

Here it's a speech issue and probably something that would not happen, but I think the whole world is noticing things are changing in Australia and tempers are flaring there.

I'm a bit baffled as to why you think what's happening there is "Board Business"? It's not. It might make for an interesting conversation in an appropriate forum.

As an ATS Staff Member, I will not moderate in threads such as this where I have participated as a member.

Yeah, you're probably right. And I do appreciate the below quote!! Most mods don't even bother with it any more.

If you encounter a case where a member of Staff is moderating in a thread they are participating in, use the complaint feature where the rest of the Staff will review it. We all know you're quite familiar with the ATS complaint feature, but for those who don't have robust experience using it, it is the ALERT! located in the little shield dropdown on the lower left of the member's mini profile on the post you have issues with.
