Repent does not mean to turn from sin, and turning from sin is not required to be saved... In fact to say you have to "Repent of sin" to be saved, would be to propagate a false Gospel... But we still have to Repent to be saved??? Allow me to explain...

so to understand what repent means I think this is the only time it's necessary to look at the Greek. Mostly I wouldn't do this but repent lost its meaning, and I don't like arguing semantics.

The transliteration of the Greek word repent is "metanoia". Which translates to english Meaning "to change your mind".

Let's break the word down so we know it means change of mind.

First "meta" means "change" which is it's english counterpart. Think of a caterpillar turning into a butterfly goes through a process of METAmorphosis.

Second "noia" means "mind" which is it's english counterpart. Think of paraNOIA matters of the mind.

A lot of confusion is we don't use repent unless your Christian in everyday modern vocabulary. People who speak spanish do though. If I were to say to someone who spoke spanish "I was gonna go to the grocery store today but I repented" in spanish, they wouldn't look at me as if it was sinful for me to go to the grocery store. I would also be grammatically correct to say it in that way. "That I had changed my mind about going to the store".

So some things to consider, obviously via context in some passages we can see we need to repent of sin, but to repent of sin is an actual "turning". So what is needed to know about our sins to be saved??? Well we have to confess we are a sinner in need of a savior. But to confess isn't repentance because again repentance is an actual turning. An example of this would be.... And I'm gonna be honest with everyone, I smoke cigarettes... I have confessed a sin to you... Did I repent of it???? No...

So what do we need to repent of to be saved. Take Mark 1:15 for example. Repent ye, and believe the Gospel.

What I am repenting of is my unbelief in the Gospel to belief in the Gospel.

So essentially I am repenting of unbelief or anything keeping me from believing in, and this is key, anything keeping me from believing in CHRIST ALONE.

For example I have to repent of dead works. Because we are saved by faith not of works lest any man should boast. I have to repent of let's say if I were to believe in Allah. I have to repent of being muslim to believing in Christ alone. Their is no such thing as a born again muslim... There is also no such thing as a born again Buddhist, it's either Christ Alone or nothing...

Now yes I do understand unbelief is a sin. So let's put these things into a category.

To say I have to repent of individual sin such as my smoking habit I have added something to a simple exercise of faith and have added a work, or a deed of the law for salvation.

So is turning from sin a work?

Yes

Jonah 3:10
10 And God saw their WORKS, that they turned from their evil way; and God REPENTED of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.

But is it a work to turn from the sin of unbelief??? No, because salvation is the GIFT of God, he did all the work!!!

John 6:28-29
28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?
29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

Notice in Jonah 3:10 God repented, so in order to know we have to repent of sin or not we need to look at the context of each individual passage to know if we are Repenting of sin, because obviously God doesn't have sin to turn from. Also interesting to note God repents more than anyone in scripture...

But everytime repentance for salvation such as Mark 1:15 is brought up, it has nothing to do with sin. How do we know this??? Because Mark 1:15 does not say "repent of sin and believe the Gospel"... In fact "repent... Of... Sin", those words in that order, is not found ONE TIME in scripture... Now obviously per the context such as Revelations we can see the repentance is from sin in that context... Context, context, context....

Look at the Gospel of John which is the book written to contain the necessary information to get someone saved. The interesting thing about John is repentance isn't even mentioned 1 time.... Not once.... Did you read that??? NOT ONCE... And it's not as if he doesn't know the word repent, because he wrote Revelations.... I've even had people tell me "well you can get the idea of repent of your sins from other books." Ok so then if repentance of sin is such a big thing, then John wouldn't be an adequate book to get you saved???? How can that be??? Listen once you believe you've repented...

You don't speak truth but twist the truth. Basically you tell sinners it is ok to sin and this is wrong.

Repent means STOP.

Change ...Stop.

Turn away......Stop.

Stop what you do and think ........when turning away from sin.

So STOP sin is the objective for those with unrepentant sins. They will not be with God upon death of the human body.

Jesus did NOT die for those who are unrepentant sinners.

We all are sinners through inherited sin, and those that repent and ask God for forgiveness in Jesus name, their sins are forgiven.... meaning they have stopped sining.

Example....stealing.... it someone repents in Jesus name, asking for forgiveness and stops stealing....this sin is forgiven. However if that person continues to steal time and time again showing a pattern, Christ's sees this....showing an unrepentant heart and this sin will NOT be forgiven until the thief stops stealing...showing repentance.

Those who continue to sin with a unrepentant heart, their sins will NOT be forgiven.

Die with sin and you will be separated from God.

I do not tell people it's ok to sin, nor do I believe that grace gives you a license to sin... How are you doing without the license btw??? That's right you still sin...

Repent does not mean to stop, did you even read the post???

YOU SAID Jesus did not die for those who are unrepentant sinners...

So according to you we are saved by the deeds of the law??? You are at complete dissonance with Paul...

I can see what you're getting at.
Misunderstandings are caused by the "modern" meanings of many Biblical words (including "heart" and "soul").

I suggest that in the case of "repent of your sin", the word "repent" is only half the problem.
The other half is "sin", which has also changed it's meaning.
For one thing, people give it a plural form, which re-defines it as an individual wrongful act.
The Lamb of God takes away "the sin of the world", not "the sins of the world".
Your real problem is with the people who say "You must repent of your SINS".

I have tackled the question of sin on these boards.
I believe it comes down to the misalignment of human will away from the will of God.
That is what the story of Adam and Eve is describing. "Knowledge of good and evil" means determining the boundary line between them, deciding what is right and what is wrong. That is God's prerogative, so that's how Adam and Eve became "like God" when they claimed it for themselves. They took their will away from his, detached themselves from him.

What Christ achieved on the Cross is a re-alignment of wills. His will was the same as his Father's. "Repentance" is the act of taking part in that re-alignment and renewing the relationship which was broken in Eden.

Read the entire NT.

So you are saying those who are unrepentant sinners are saved by Grace?

So it's ok to murder, steal, lie, have abortions, fornication, time and time again....non-stop and think it's ok.....I can live a life of sin and Jesus accepts this?

Is this what you saying?

Then Lucifer and the fallen angels will too be forgiven based on your beliefs....

If you hate a brother without cause it's murder, if you look at a women with list in your heart it's adultery, even a foolish thought is a sin... the standard is perfection friend, Jesus is the only way...

Solomon was considered the wisest person outside of God to ever exist, yet he had 700 wives and 300 concubines, and at the end of his life he completely fell away and worshipped Pagan gods... yet he was saved....a reply to: DeathSlayer

Correct Jesus is the way, Just like when he told the whore that was to be stoned for her sins, " Go and sin no more." John 8:11

Well Jesus wasn't wrong there at all, here's why...
1 John 3:9
9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

But John also say "whoever says he is without sin, deceiveth himself and the truth is not in him....

These are seemingly contradictory statements but that aren't...

The will of the Father is that we should come back to him.
That is repentance. We repent from separating ourselves from him.
The alternative is judgement.
The New Testament meaning of "salvation" is "being saved from judgement".
We are saved from judgement when we come back to him.
So repentance, as you and I are defining it, amounts to salvation.

I will have to disagree friend, repentance is not what saves... look at the entire Gospel of John which claims to the necessary information to get you saved... do you know what it says about repentance??? Absolutely nothing...

So if we are talking about reconciliation it's by believing, and that is also the will of the father...
John 6:40
40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

In James 2 it says demons believe in "ONE" God...

believing in monotheism alone... by itself... doesn't save you...

Muslims believe in ONE God...Christ rejecting Jews believe in ONE God.... why are you not answering any of my points of contention, you ask a question, I answer, then you verse jump...a reply to: DeathSlayer

So you refuse to answer a simple question since Lucifer believes in Christ, does he go to heaven?

Your thread is not about montheism...it is about not needing to repent....sounds like you are sidestepping...we never spoke about Muslims blah blah blah.... so the devil believes in God, does he get to go back to the Father?
