Southwest has canceled 1,006 Sunday flights as of 11 a.m. ET, according to flight tracker FlightAware. That's 27% of the the airline's scheduled flights and the highest of any U.S. airline by a wide margin.

The airline blamed the problem on air traffic control issues and weather. In a statement Saturday the airline expressed optimism its operations on Sunday would improve, not worsen.

Air traffic control issues!!!!!! Ha, we all know what that means. People are leaving because of vaccination status.
This is all so dumb. If people want to get vaccinated, let them, if they don’t, let them.

I hope that people are paying attention because I really believe this is going to have an impact on the holiday season.
There is a whole tsunami of things on the horizon. I also see crime going up dramatically. We’ve seen it in the city, but it will
Probably bleed over into the suburbs.

Stay safe everyone.

This article has a more accurate portrayal of what is going on. I don't personally know anyone who quit their job over the vaccine, but I am seeing a lot of people on NextDoor and Facebook saying that they did. The holiday season is definitely going to be one of shortages.

I read a quote from a pilot, but it was shared as secondhand information on social media, that before the mandates take effect, they decided to use up all their paid vacation time, all at the same time. Call it a protest of a sort...I don't blame rhem.
I cannot verify the validity.

Something to add as I was almost affected by this (not southwest but another big carrier). I was supposed to return home on Friday but on Tuesday my flight was mysteriously cancelled. I was instructed to call and get a new return flight home.

This has never happened to me before, they knew 3 days in advance something wrong was going to happen on Friday?

Instead of pushing my flight later I got on a plane and headed home Thursday instead. Then we all saw the issues that started Friday.

Was there a recent cutoff date to get the vaccine for SW employees?

This sucks as I have a SW Airlines CC with a ton of miles racked up.

Yep. At least the planes are not falling out of the sky or flying into buildings or mountains.

So you are just going to ignore past history to add to your confirmation bias? I am pretty sure that is exactly what those against vaccines will do here and that is your choice but I can choose to actually give facts and or history vs just offering my opinion.

From 2018....

"American Airlines in June canceled 7,218 flights, about 4% of its scheduled operation and more than any other U.S. carrier. Overall, airlines canceled close to 15,000 flights in June, 19% more than in June 2018."

Why is the status only impacting Southwest and not the three majors?

Wait for what? United, for example, says they are at 97% and Southwest's pilot union said this:

The Southwest Airline Pilots Association (SWAPA), which represents nearly 10,000 pilots, told CNBC that its members were not holding up the flights and blamed the airline’s executives for mismanaging the company’s staffing and scheduling.

Just wait for airlines to cancel flights which they have done for years and usually in much larger numbers then your vaccination status induced exodus or are we waiting for something else?

They all are being affected Spirit has cacelled 2/3rds of its flights prolem is they are a much smaller airline. Theres a couple of problems and the airlines cant manage it one being lack of customers. This means a flight is cancelled because the airlines are not going to keep a plane booked with only 10 passengers costs too much in fuel etc. Then when they cancel these flights that causes flight crew shortages because your people are not where they need to be. Which of course causes further cancellations and again flight crews in the wrong place. Add to that they cant afford to bring back all the pilots they laid off it takes time for retraining pilots to get recirtified etc and the demand has to be there. I have a friend that American hasnt rought him back yet the business isnt there.

Where are the mass cancellations for United, Delta and American? Did you read what the pilot's union rep said regarding Southwest?

Go to flight aware have a look American and the others are dealing with cancellatios in the hundreds as well. Though some airlines are handling it better than others as its domestic flights that are taking the biggest hits. There is not an airline right now that is not cancelling flights as i said they are not going to fly if they are going to lose money on fuel

I know I did, I chuckled at them passing the buck lol blame it on management, it’s a classic move. I know when I break something expensive at work I always blame management first, it’s there fault for making me play with the new and expensive shiny knowing damn well I always abuse my own toys.

It's most likely accurate, I'm thinking it's a combination of poor scheduling and some sort of system issue since no one else is cancelling flights.
