All it would take is someone to disrupt the 13 DNS Root Name Servers (at least years ago, not sure about today) or disrupt (re-route) the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) as China has done in the past. The Internet wouldn't actually be down, but would cause alot of chaos.

There has been public debate about the need for an Internet kill- switch, defined in a proposed Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act. This act removes the powers established in the 1934 Communications Act and gives the President the authority to stop the Internet in case of a cyber attack.

I seriously doubt this "kill-switch" exists however, the Gov't could definitely isolate a Country or Countries from rest of world Internet to a high degree. Roughly 2/3 of the data that runs across the Internet 24/7 is through Submarine cables under the sea.

A fantastic business opportunity for analogue communications manufacturers, old fashioned type writer makers and any number of other now out of business industry's.

Not everything about the net is good, back in the old days people used to go to the pub for there gossip but these days they past a miniature microwave oven to the side of there head, get bad eyesight staring at a tiny screen for far too long (I am guilty of this) or have there lives governed by people they have never met on social media.

If the internet vanished tomorrow after the initial shock when we got things back up and running and supply chains sorted out a vast number of small and not so small business opportunities would appear for those that knew how to handle the problems in the old fashioned way.

But in the short term, manic depression on a mass scale as the disconnected people had to go out of there homes and see the world with there own eyes for the first time in over a generation, starvation as communication and logistical connections broke and general chaos, governments would even fall and martial law be implemented for the first time in generations in many first world nations.

Really good point, initially cheaper electricity bills followed by the power company's hiking there prices to make up for all the lost revenue those digital devices used to create for them.

My bank was down for a while, and I heard of other things that were down that are rarely down.

This has me wondering, is this just the beginning? I lived and remember a time without daily use of the internet and computers.
I know I can survive without them, but the question is how bad would that be? Have we come too far and become too reliant on it? I think for many people it would be absolutely devastating.

Just think about how almost every facet of our lives is somehow “connected”. The clock I use everyday is connected, my watch, my bank, my shopping, how I talk to my kids, how I plan my days, weeks, trips, etc. Even my washing machine and dryer are connected.
If by chance the big ol’ plug is disconnected I shudder to think of what will happen to society. (Yes I know, it’s not just a plug, I’m talking high level, like the government does something, electrical storms, etc, let’s not focus on the how) Can you imagine the younger crowd that has never known life without it? I think it would be very difficult for them.

For those of you that live in a cave and just pop into ATS please don’t, just don’t. The reality is the bulk of people are hyper connected these days.

It certainly was an eye opening experience. Information technology has mutated from an educational service to a cacophony of "everything that's happening everywhere always" aka sensory hive mind. Being disconnected amounts to your whole identity being muted, a psychological sickness that is actively encouraged because marketing and industry. You'll notice that when certain platforms are offline sales will plummet and that's the real crisis. Half of the world doesn't know how to self realize unless some corporate sponsored muppet on the screen tells them what to think or buy.

Only thing that scares me is all the banking is electronic. Wake up one day and find out all the money is gone from computers or shut off.

Imagine if there was no way to determine who had what money. All banking and investment records destroyed by some virus or hacker.

Short of some kind of a science fiction level event the Internet cannot simply go down as others have indicated. People have _tried_ to take down some of the root DNS servers before but generally they have failed. Even the few larger blips like China playing games with global networking have been minor in the end. Someone previously said there were 3 points where connections from the rest of the globe entered the US and that is kind of accurate in a very generalized way, there are peering points where trans-oceanic fiber comes in however its not a single monolithic cable at each point, its TONS of different cables that come in, often from different company providers but ultimately serving the same purpose of connecting the US to the internet. Back to those root DNS servers again, even if one or two went offline the nature of DNS is that caches can persist for hours to days at lower tiers (like the servers your ISP uses) especially in the case of frequently accessed things (like Facebook).

Even going up a level away from the networking aspect of the internet you have service providers like AWS, Azure and GCP who basically run all the websites and services we frequent. They run geographically diverse datacenters and all provide various mechanism to synchronize data between say us-west-1 and us-east-1 so that a well designed application can have fault tolerance enabling an entire region of a hosting provider to go offline without impacting the service for more than a few minutes or less.

The internet is absolutely so fragmented its unlikely for it to ever go away baring some sort of legit Apocalypse type of event.

Only thing is people are not equal.

It would be a mass slaughter with everyman for themselves.

Then small groups and factions would develop and band together who would then go on and fight and squabble with one another over what remained.

Perhaps the biggest mistake is in thinking that if the internet went down.. somehow the massive centralized systems, companies, and organizations would go down too.

This is not the case.

Basically, it would drop the general population out of accessing anything yet the main structures would still exist. Then, to get access again, one will have to comply.

On a large enough scale (impacting power, manufacturing, food, and information), it would ensure the Corporate Congregations victory and solidify their power, rather than the assumption that it would do the opposite. All of their systems are hardened to this, with the possible exceptions of specific sites.

The internet itself is nearly impossible to "take down," however, access to centralized sites is a different story. Of course, many will simply say thats ok too.. until they realize that when masses of people comply with what is required for access, whether or not an individual buys into it is nearly completely irrelevant. Just as we have seen with so many things recently. In fact, I would even go so far as to say that this is at least a plan, if not the plan. Disrupting power, food, manufacturing, and information channels will cause the Corporate Congregation to freak out and will cause the general opposition to cheer as if a victory was attained. All the while, the heightened emotional state of both social groups will distract them from what is going on behind the scenes.

The general population has been carefully groomed into two camps: one that uses, supports, and propagates the products and marketing of the Corporate Congregation as a new religion. And another that has essentially adopted neo-ludditism, rejecting nearly all modern technology as "the cause of all our woes." Both unwittingly work towards the same end of total centralized power and authority.

I spend lots of time researching stuff on the net, and this is about the only site I do go to. I do facebook, but only check it in the evening most times and I make a few comments occasionally to let people know I am still alive. some times I don't check it for three days and the kids are always asking why I don't answer my messages....I hate instant messages, if they want to get hold of me they can call. The bad thing is I have no clue what they are talking about when I do not check on it every day, the messages are already three days old, I mentioned something in a conversation on the phone and they post something on facebook messenger. I hate checking my E-mails let alone having to check messages on facebook. If people want to talk to me, call me.

I have learned a lot from my research already, enough to know that most things people believe are real really are not real. Consensus of the time governs what is real and our reality is really messed up these days. Technology has hurt society more than it has helped us, it has complicated everything. Einstein once said something like the simpler something is the more advanced it is.

I hate these new cars, why do you need a backup camera when you can see out of your mirrors? Why does the car have to shut off at a stoplight and restart, for the quart of gas you save a week, the savings are dwarfed by the wearing out of the starter.

This isn't a huge bank, so yeah, a bank that I've done business with for thirty + years and it's on their letter head. No, I don't think it'll be that big of a problem. The only problem I do see is if the bank would have the actual cash money, that's where the problem will be, then there'll be a definite delay in getting money.

I don't believe that the internet would be "taken down". It's operational structure might be accidentally damaged though by some natural catastrophe. The most logical outcome judging by the direction that the leadership of the planet is moving is personal restriction to access. I.S.P.'s would be deputised by governments into monitoring, restricting and controlling the flow of their traffic. The same way employers are deputised to mandate medical procedures or else no money to live on.

For the citizens of first world developed nations it is really difficult to really accept what is happening in the world right now. I mean the full implications of it. It does boggle the mind. What is happening is a process of total and absolute social control. The political leaders of every nation are in lockstep towards this end. The good times we have known, the standards of living we have enjoyed, the permissiveness we have been allowed, the wealth that we created; in the final analysis was all just grooming. The way that cattle are groomed. We thought that we were paying for the standard of living we had by the taxes we paid. No, that was just interest on the loan. So what is the real repayment of "the loan"?

I remember about 20 years ago I was working in IT testing cellular, and we had a nasty windstorm that knocked out power to half the city for almost a week.

Cooking breakfast/coffee on my camp stove on the apartment stoop I soon realized how many people (besides myself) that had any prep skills.

I had 3-4 phones with unltd sims for work (and a solar panel for charging) and started letting neighbors borrow them for a minute to check email and other stuff they felt necessary.

I can say if this lasted more than the 4 days it did things might have gotten pair shaped fast, since I was the nearest source or resources for an entire bldg of unprepared people. The smell of coffee can make some like wild animals

Family game night, and dinner, with the main course being a squirrel that will allude me for a while.

People will be forced to interact with each other in person, and we'll be a lot harder to keep track of, and near impossible to control the narrative (A lot harder to fake real people than posters on the internet). I think if the powers that be did this, it would long term turn out to be the biggest mistake they ever made.
