Mexican and South American gold mines in particular are notorious for scams called "salting" the mines (pretty sure that's the term for it). What they do is allege to have found gold by actually placing gold at the mine for insurers and inspectors to find, then issue these fantastic prospectuses calling for investors. Investors look to see if they have certifications of gold being found by (inspectors) and if they're insured, or can be insured (insurers), then dive in head first. Once they've got a bunch of investor money they just vanish into the night taking everyone's money.
Classic scam too, and some of them fool even the savviest investors.
