I'm not confused, I know exactly what I did.

Only time I pay attention to stars/flags is when something I find way out there get a gazillion stars/flags and when my opus posts and threads get ignored. I'm kidding.

I star/flag things that are well written, well thought out, well sourced, and/or interesting but am in no way driven by, questing after, or being influenced by them. I've been around the boards for far too long for this to come even close to mattering.

If people want stars they just have to make a political thread or to make a post in a political thread and make their post(s) following the political trend of that thread, that way it's easy to get more than 30 stars, even with a post that is not meaningful or engaging.

Remember when stars were implemented and something went wonky and gave all the cool old timers oodles and oodles of them? Well, they gave them to me too by mistake.

That bug in the stars system happens in a specific circumstance, but I'm not going to say how to do it.
