The Universe is Hostile to Computers

If you are a nerd who enjoys technology and space related science, you will likely find this video of interest. The video covers how cosmic rays and particles affect our technology on earth, sometimes with humorous affect and sometimes with disastrous effect. Although I was aware of some of what is talked about in the video, I definitely learned some things. Well worth the 23 minutes in my opinion.

I blame it on sunspots .

Soo! all the windows Blue screen of Death
are to blame on black holes and quasars and back ground radiation?

Dont you get a LOT of radiation in space?
they had computers on the space shuttle.
ok 5 of them.

but they never said any thing about this.
they would have had a LOT of faults.
think about it.

some thing is afoot !
will they say all computer bugs are a act of god?
they seting us up far a big fall?
like ALLl of the stock exschandge crashes.
and they blame Radiation?

The ThinkPads that were sent to space, were all radiation hardened.

It was a very specific contract, and IBM/Lenovo took part in it, mostly for the publicity.

You must have slept through that part, the space shuttle computers were mentioned specifically starting at 17:30. Four computers were used for navigation and control, simultaneously running identical software. Sometimes one of them had a cosmic ray glitch, so the commands were decided my majority rules, in other words, it followed the calculations of the three computers that didn't have a glitch and ignored the one that did.

They also could track the bit flips this way and found on one five-day mission, there were 161 bit flips.

Usually though we don't have four computers running in parallel like that so it's usually much harder to confirm bit flip errors, but obviously they happen.

Its called "Bit Flipping" and is caused by positive charged particle.

Happens all the time but no usually knows that it was binary bit flipped from a 0 to a 1 or vice versa.

In the November Elections last year I guess the United States was bombarded from Space with
enough particles to flip millions of votes to Biden.

Or is there a more down to earth explanation !

Anyway... Particles hit electronic circuits and can crash computers or change predicted results
