Since the stroke I've grown fond of skim milk powder which I store in glass jars. Absolutely vile. Even Kahlua can't save it however it murders fat cells in their sleep. Lost 60lbs.

a reply to: Liquidiron We have stocked up on items we use frequently, such as many different kinds of dried beans, dried peas, whole grains, some nuts and seeds (walnuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and sesame seeds). We have some flours and fresh eggs on hand, since we recently got into making fresh egg noodles; note -- those can be made with just the egg whites, for those who have to keep an eye on their blood cholesterol levels. Our stocks of frequently used seasonings include tamari sauce (large glass bottles), mustard, ketchup, liquid smoke, and spices. We regularly stock up on tea varieties (for hot tea and for sun teas), as well as the 18-ounce packages of ground Starbucks coffee that some low-cost markets will sell at a little over the wholesale price; ground coffee should be stored in a cool dark closet, ideally in a sealed glass container.

We also have some apple cider vinegar and hydrogen peroxide on hand, since we do a brief soaking of all purchased fruits and vegetables (except corn with the husk still on) to remove all exterior pesticide residues. That recipe is from Gary Null, PhD. (1/4 cup apple cider vinegar, 1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide, and 1 cup of filtered water).

a reply to: Liquidiron ... one other comment regarding stored grains: In North America, September and October are the harvest months for this year's crop of wild rice. So, if you are buying wild rice this fall, you might want to wait until mid-November, so that you will be buying from this year's harvest rather than from last year.
