Ok, this OP will be a bit short because it's basically a question I want to pose to people. It seems to me that society has lost sight of some things, and I want to know how true that is.

In order to find out though, it will require going step by step, question/answer.

1. Why did we get the vaccine? (This is for those who did)

Because they asked me politely...

To make it easier for me to travel.

my brother had both jabs because, and i quote, "i had to have it for work". not health. work.

Personally, I got it because an asthmatic claustrophobic exercising in any mask is a uniquely joyless experience.

The vast majority will quote this reasoning........coercion/manipulation.

Otherwise their just plain indefensible it would still seem.

Ok. So the vaccine protects you.

It is what vaccines typically do.

2. How much does it protect you? In what way?

It was never about protecting me..I got the vaccine because it could benefit the more vulnerable in our society.

Worst case, I got some # injected in me that will make me go loopy

Best case, I got to save a few lives.

1.Yes that is what vacines normally do, some more effectively than others but the basic concept is the same.

2. As I said it reduces the chance of getting a bad outcome from covid. The exact amount varies depending on what outcome and what variant.

I got the vaccine (J&J) because of pressure from my in-laws - my partner is immunocompromised - and partly due to my employer requiring it if employees want to come into the office.

For my employer, I have the "option" to just work from home, but it would have been political suicide if I was the only person on my team who wasn't in compliance for on-site visits since I'm in the training department and we are asked to do both in-person and remote training.

Yes but protecting you is protecting others, right?

If you don't get it because of the vaccine, then you can't spread it which is how you protect others.

Is this correct?

So, forgive me ScepticScot, but you sound like a bit of a skeptic. You got it, but you don't seem to be very confident in it.

So, I think I will ask you one of my other questions:

3. What are the masks for?

Keep in mind I am asking you this in isolation from the matter of vaccinated or not.

Which part of my response didn't sound very confident?

Masks reduce the amount that covid is transmitted.

Is there a point to the questions?

I guess so...

We had these ICU beds filling up and my government asked us to social distance and take a shot.

I did, no self interest, just happy to help out.

Because I wanted to be in less danger of falling ill, and because any alleged problems with the vaccine itself were much too hypothetical to be a factor in decision-making.

Yes.

The part where you seem unsure just exactly how much your vaccine works.

Did you start out thinking it was 80 to 90% effective against COVID?

a reply to: DISRAELI

Ok. I think you represent a lot of people, especially people who are in more high risk groups or who may be older like my folks, but not exclusively.

I think we're also seeing a number who got it not because they feared COVID but because they had other considerations: travel, job, vulnerable family, other personal issues, etc.

What I am looking for are people who got it and still fear COVID enough to provoke the hysteria we're seeing.

I want to understand why because some things don't logically add up to me.

I answered that part.

It depends on what measure of effectiveness and what variant, there isn't a single answer.

That isn't lack of confidence, its accuracy

You did not answer my question.

Did you start out believing what you were told: 80 to 90% effective in preventing infection?
