Why should a student do the work, if the teachers aren't allowed to flunk 'em, if they've earned it?

Can you show us in the bill where it says that teachers can't grade students as usual, assigning grades A though F?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but It's my understanding of the bill, that it temporarily suspends the ability of the Board of Education to deny diplomas to qualifying kids that have completed their credits and have already passed their classes, until 2023.
olis.oregonlegislature.gov...

The real problem is there are a lot of students graduating high school being unable to read, write and do basic math or doing so at an extremely low grade level and that is before there is a law that encourages just waving those metrics anyway.

The United States is 25th in the world on education and laws like this in no way are going to improve that standing.

Students still need to take the SATs if they want to go to college.

Actually my son's college waved SATs, went with GPA and classes he took.

Say it isn't so! You mean to tell me colleges are actually taking kids based on their high school academic records rather than have them take a test to prove they can read, write and do maths?!!

This is the worst.

One more reason I’m FROM Oregon and not a resident.

Flip side though… my kids can read and write. So, they’re already many steps ahead apparently and their future is bright.

Next UO will mandate college textbooks are banned and you only get pictures, verbal lectures and your diploma is based on attendance - sad thing is I can envision all of that happening in Oregon.

When will reading, writing, being able to do math become racist?

Asking for educated people.

Anytime anything might be thought of as offensive to someone at anytime in the future, then it's clearly racist. Even if you don't see it right now a hundred years from now someone might think it was racist and that's why it must be removed.

Or so that the Oregon class of 2026 would write:
"Woktheid djsirra aakighert oej ejose sdjitue s sosjrfjfssr."

Don't worry, I'm sure memes will replace the written word in the near hour or so. Unless a rock posts it, then it's just plain racist.

I remember when I lived in a reality where basic academics were there for people to clarify what is and what is not offensive to others. Now I somehow live in a reality where everything is offensive, and now the price must be paid. How come I don't live in a reality where Thanos did the snap, and all these crybabies disappeared?

Many countries ahead of you are doing their best to catch you up.....the world is being dumbed down at an alarming rate.

.... and laws like this in no way are going to improve that standing

And no doubt will be replicated almost everywhere.

I am absolutely offended by this. I had 3 learning disabilities growing up that the overpaid morons in the school district didn't catch, and these people are going to get handed 'success'?

This is immoral and unfair to anyone who actually works hard.

I hate to tell them this, but Employers require reading, writing, and math. Good luck.

The standards have been lowered everywhere.

Everyday the best and brightest are past on in order to offer diversity.

Colleges have to deny the smart student, police academies have to deny the better officer.

Because of affirmative action you have to choose diversity over skill

Also every single Democrat policy is to undermine and weaken the country.

This lowering of the standards will only make the country and its citzens weaken and more stupid in the long run.

ISIS couldn't do more damge to the country then the Democrats

Oregon Governor Kate Brown quietly signed a bill last month that removed the requirement for graduating high school children in the state to be proficient in reading, writing, and math, in an effort to aid “students of color.”

the governor’s deputy communications director, Charles Boyle, told the Oregonian that suspending the reading, writing, and math proficiency requirements would benefit “students of color”

Boyle said that “leaders from those communities have advocated time and again for equitable graduation standards"

Source

Oregon Democrat Governor Kate Brown has signed a bill into law that removes the requirement to be able to read, write, and do basic math to graduate high school. Her official reasoning was that it will be fair to black students, or "students of color". Apparently her and her administration feel that it isn't fair to expect black students to be able to read and write or do basic math, because it isn't an "equitable graduation standard". In other words, they believe blacks aren't as capable of reading and writing and therefore can't be held to the same standards as whites.

Time has shown us that the liberals and Democrats have a history of this mentality - that blacks need their help because they can't get by on their own. I'm reminded time and time again of the video of the liberal college student trying to explain that requiring voter IDs is racist because black people don't know how to use the internet to figure out how to get IDs.

Here's an open challenge for anyone at all: Defend this without saying something that would have you labelled a racist.

racism is treating someone different because of their skin color not their SAT scores

they might get a useless HS diploma but when they have a 3ed grad reading and writing level they will just be another black person on welfare and complaining how unfair things are.

I took a 23 and me test and i have a good amount of African in me but im white. Would i still get this pass?

the bill is raciest, the woman who wrote it just assumes black people and colored people aren't as smart as white people and that's why they needed this.

maybe the problem is at home, kids having kids, no dad, drugs, living in the hood.

getting into a collage because you got a pass on all your failures and affirmative action would feel empty

the bill is saying to black and colored people that they weren't smart enough to get into collage because you cant read or do math sounds pretty racist already.

So not only are they creating the real life version of idiocracy.

Billions of your tax money will be spent on making people stupid.

No worries though. Teachers and their unions will make bank.

He couldn't take it due to the lockdown... Also they are waving the SAT for ROTC scholarships so far. He took the ASVAB exam and scored top 99 percentile, so I think with that and GPA they are using that.

So I don't see where they are removing Math or English as the OP suggests since the requirements are still 3 years of math and 4 years of English. As I said before I wish they taught more Statistics, Probability, Critical thinking and Problem-Solving abilities.

Schools are failing kids in other areas like after 4 years of english people still can't write a sentence, or after 3 years of math can barely do simple math.

You don't see that in this bill either.

Critical Thinking is no longer taught or accepted. Not even to those who are in honors type courses. It is all about indoctrinating one line of thought to create drones of children and future workers.

Those who want an education do not get it but those who complain it it too hard are rewarded. The same people who think they should be able to live working a part time job.

They are producing slaves to the government.

I never took a test to graduate high school, and went on to college. I even graduated Magna cum laude. This is much to do about nothing. It's a test. They still have to have all the necessary credits.

They still have to have meet their credits requirements and have to have passed all their required classes to get a diploma. Doesn't that show adequate skills?

Dunno man....teachers grades can be pretty subjective. And it seems that this whole thing speaks to this, else why get rid of the standardized testing to begin with?

I passed Algebra II because I was an all state offensive lineman on a team that could win district the first time in 20+ years. It absolutely was not because I was able to grasp matrices.

Students who like to learn and with parents that value education, never have trouble exceeding what ever standards are set. They never will be effected by lowered standards. Disadvantaged students; which are those that need the most help, will be the ones that suffer from low bars.

The fact is the entire public education system has failed Americans, have become corrupt diploma mills, pushing students through the system for government money. There are many students especially in poor and disadvantaged areas, that are graduating with sub standard skills. How are they? Because, there are teachers and schools who are obviously fudging the grades and the credits to get them to the end and hand them a diploma, without any care or concern where they will end up.

I will say this about exit tests, if you proficient in the knowledge base you are being tested on, you will pass the test. If students are failing the tests, it isn't because of some nefarious reason, it's because they are not proficient in the knowledge base being tested.

Getting rid of the the tests is just another check and balance being removed in an already failing education system. In ten years we may be 45th in the world on education.
