Al and his team sat at their favorite table in the popular cafe. They had spent many an afternoon sifting through data on this spot and would likely spend many more. The coffee was good, people left them alone, and it was more comfortable than the lab in which they spent the remainder of their time.

“This doesn't make any sense.” Al said as he furrowed his brow showing some of the deeper crevices he was capable of. “This vaccine appears to be making people more susceptible to the disease rather than immune.”

The team worked long hours since the outbreak began trying to find the true nature of the disease. Every time they thought they had it nailed down the darn thing mutated and existing data no longer applied. They had even joked on occasion that it seemed the virus had a sense of humor and was anticipating their next step. Indeed, it seemed to be intuitive at the very least, but that is a skill reserved for sentient beings, not automaton single cell organisms.

The team had discovered artifacts of engineered components to this virus, yet the governments of the world insisted it was a naturally occurring virus originating in bats. The team had pointed out that the two are not mutually exclusive yet their message had been squelched in the media. Yes, the virus originated in bats, but had also been modified numerous times, and was now running rampant around the world inexplicably taking some victims and leaving others behind as if they had been selected based on some morbid criteria no one was aware of.

“This data is too specific and consistent to be coincidence, but it makes no sense.” Jennifer, Al's teammate, said. “No matter how we slice and dice this data, it appears that the vaccine was intended to make people more susceptible to the virus without killing them. The vaccine gives people just enough immunity to fight the virus off, at least for a while, but not be cured of it.” Jennifer sat back in her chair, biting her lower lip, as she contemplated the real meaning of what she had just said.

Al jumped in and picked up where Jennifer left off. “There is one way this makes sense, only one I can think of any way.” Al stated with a somber tone. “The goal is to make people susceptible but not cure them. Only to offer them a temporary respite from the disease after which they require additional booster shots to remain safe – probably for the rest of their lives. Someone is going to get awfully rich off of this...”

The End – until the next booster shot anyway.

This sounds far-fetched. LOL.

Isn't it funny that only a few years ago this would be the start of a good Sci-Fi movie?

Now we live in it.

People can make up some strange stuff...but nothing compares to real life.
