Non violent crimes should not exist, with the exception of stuff that could potentially harm other people (DUI, reckless driving, etc...)

Nobody should be in jail because they sold some weed, injected whatever the cool opium is now, snorted some meth, didn't pay taxes...

If it can't harm anyone but you, it shouldn't be illegal.

Let all criminals out who are in there for something that couldn't hurt anyone but themselves. We could drastically reduce the need for prison cells.

If you want to really reduce instances of crime, just fire all police
no reported crimes means no crimes, right?

this woman lost her damn mind.

I will say there should be more emphasis on the rehabilitation part of course. Jail ain't nothing but criminal college, but still...
surely nobody takes her seriously...right?

They can be wrong, or misguided or overly-optimistic, but they don't have to be mentally ill.

That is a correct statement .
They don't have to remain mentally ill .
They can actually cure their own mental disease .
I did in the 90s .
I stopped being a Progressive Liberal , and all my mental problems went away .
Ignorance , stupid ideas , saying "stuff" that I didn't even believe, and a host of others .

Posting that here , I am in hope that will help other folks .

Apparently the constitution says criminals are, for the time they have to serve, litteral slaves.

Get rid of that line, and the problem should solve itself as their will not be incentives anymore for corporate world to abuse.

As said above in other posts, stop putting in prison people who are not violent, which IS one of the abuse created by the line about slavery in the constitution.

Right. If there were no police or prisons, people would just not commit violent crime. Why didn't I think of that...

Just like when President Trump said that if they stop testing for COVID the number of infections will go down.

You stop arresting and incarcerating criminals and prison populations decline. Of course that only makes the crime rates sky rocket on the streets.

Yes we probably need some reform but Richard Pryor said it best..

I have one way of achieving what she wants, end for profit prisons.

Unfortunately the people who own those are also the same people who pay for most of your party’s election campaigns, as well as a good chunk of the RINOs. So good luck getting that reform through the system.

So now that we found out the tests were faulty that means DJT was right. The official numbers are going down. We know why the leftist will ignore this. The narrative they lie about is wounded by it.

I can't get my head round how these people think... its just too far fetched .
It can't be labelled anything other than mental illness.. way beyond stupid.

A differing opinion does not always indicate mental illness. There seems to be a lot of concern for the mental health of people on the left side of the isle.

They can be wrong, or misguided or overly-optimistic, but they don't have to be mentally ill.

You are correct. They don't have to be mentally ill, but that doesn't stop them. This is yet another case of aoc completely failing to understand the issue and blurting out some inane response. If the goal is simply to reduce the number of people in prison then yes abolishing prisons will accomplish that goal. But the idea is to reduce the number of crimes being committed which in turn results in less people being prosecuted which results in less people in prison. That middle part, where you stop the crimes and reduce the number of prosecutions, is the important part. Believing that simply abolishing prisons will stop people from committing crimes is like believing abolishing hospitals will stop people from getting sick.

She wants it her way. This article just reinforces that point.

To that end, Ocasio-Cortez said that, beyond federally legalizing cannabis, it’s important for lawmakers to ensure that any regulated markets that emerge are structured in a way that encourages participation by communities most hurt under prohibition.

“There are different ways that we can go about legalizing cannabis in the United States, and you can go about it in a way that concentrates power in a [Big Agriculture] way that concentrates power in big banks and that cuts out small mom and pops,” she said. “And then there’s another path towards legalization where everyday people and especially the black and brown communities that have been disproportionately impacted by the war on drugs can be at the front of the line of enjoying the economic benefits of legalization.”

You don't need any social justice legislation rolled into it. All you need is a clean bill that makes weed legal, Joe can sign pardons for a reviewed list of non-violent federal drug offenders, and the states can regulate marijuana how they see fit.

It's not that she's wrong. It's that she wants to be right her way. I'm sure the people rotting in prison on mandatory life sentences for repeat weed offenses aren't terribly concerned about the minority mom and pop weed growers that may or may not exist at some future point when, laughable at best, Republicans agree to legalize weed AND pass some racial equity measures. I'm willing to bet a tax-funded grant pool for minority growers is part of her plan too. It's just political theater.

It's laughable when you consider that NYC has already started his type of plan. We see where that has gotten them, how much are shootings up again in NYC? It all sounds great on paper but the reality is not so great. I mean non-violent crime means nobody gets hurt right? Do any of you realize just how many crimes that covers? The people stealing from stores are not all just poor people who need to feed their families. Some are just straight scum. There is a cost to peoples lively-hoods, yea big name stores can eat the losses to a point but what about the small business owners? And what happens when your non incarceration methods fail and fail repeatedly? Do you fine them more? What then becomes the method of enforcing certain almost common sense social norms? Every child is taught stealing is wrong and that has been taught since the beginning of time and we must be doing something wrong since people still steal. At some point punishment is needed and incarceration is a bit more humane than how some countries deal with it.

Just what is a problem with

''“I want to abolish our carceral system that’s designed to trap Black and Brown men,”

What is wrong with that. By now we all should know that people that are held to lower class status in this country are more apt to be targeted for imprisonment.

''I want justice''. What's wrong with that

''I want peace''. What's wrong with that.

I want prosperity. Noting ''crazy about that either.

She also said.

''“If we want to reduce violent crime, if we want to reduce the number of people in our jails, the answer is to stop building more of them,”

While this may sound crazy to some it takes on a very different meaning when we understand that to a very large degree our penal system is now a privately owned system that relies for it's profit upon the incarceration of as many people as possible.

That statement also takes on meaning that was intended by her statement but left out of the quote from the OP

“The answer is to make sure that we actually build more hospitals, we pay organizers, we get people mental health care and overall health care, employment, etc. It’s to support communities, not throw them away.”

Use that money to help rather than condemn.

What do you propose we do with murderers, rapists, child molesters, the criminally insane? Should we just get the mass murderer some counseling? Think that will stop it? What do you say to the families of victims that would never know justice? AOC is ridiculous. I'd love to see what would happen if they abolished police and jails and we all had to fend for ourselves. Something tells me that republican gun owners would fair a Hell of a lot better than the soy infused left. Just saying.

Well said, sir!!!

Not a thing wrong with that. Implementing, however, might be a little tougher. Too many entrenched interests involved on all sides of the issue.

But, well said.
