So, I had a wheel of cheese.
Soft, ripened, double cream, cow's milk.
It has a buttery, mildly pungent flavor.
I picked it up about a week ago and just left it sitting open on a cutting board.
It's good to spread on bread to knock the edge off the munchies.
Last night I was sitting at my computer and my tummy growled.
I got up, tore a chunk of bread off a loaf, spread a dollop of cheese and cracked a pint of stout to wash it down.
The only light was coming from the computer screen.
I was just about finished when I caught sight of movement in the cheese.
I turned on the lights and was not pleasantly surprised to see that gnats were swarming around the cheese and maggots were roiling about in it.
It tasted good. I'm not sick.
Oh, well. Protein.
I've heard that bleu cheese is poisonous to rats. It is yummy, though.

Yeah, I'm a cheese person and I've even learned how to get into bleu cheeses lately, but I don't think I could do this unless I was starving ... which, come to think of it, was likely how someone discovered it was both edible and desirable to eat at all.
It's probably the explanation for balut too.

That beats anything I ever did. I did the same once at night, but it was a slice of pizza left on the counter, lights were out, grabbed it after getting up and ate it. Turned on the light to discover I had eaten a lot of ants with it.

Gross but Andrew Zimmern says "if it looks good, eat it".
Yet nearly puked while eating durian fruit.
Several people die each year from eating sannakji (live octopus.)
